Thinking of hosting osu panel at local con

As title says, I'm thinking of sharing osu with random people at the next convention I go to. Problem being, aside from explaining what it is, demonstrating the gameplay and offering to let people try, I can't really think of anything to do.

Anyone have idea of things that could make it more interesting to people who know nothing?

Edit: Panel approved:

I will be hosting this at Anime Evolution 2013 which will take place in Vancouver from June 28-30, 2013 in the University of British Columbia. Exact time during the event as of now is unknown.

you could play a hard song that would look fun and impress people. then when you would let people try it out, you could switch to an easier song so they could actually have fun and have a chance at passing it.

Hur hur~ I've done this last year. I have the video up on youtube if you wanna see it.

Hit me up with that video. I'd be glad to learn from someone with experience~

Also, song choice: I think for demonstration, it has to be something short. Unfortunately, I'm no top 100 player and can only play average insanes.

I'll explain what I did in the panel. We did have a crowed that wanted to learn the game and will be doing it again this year. (Explaining about Mania and other things)

Haha, oh yeah, I totally forgot about taiko/ctb/mania. (I suck at them)

What do you think I can do if no one seems particularly interested in trying? And the converse too, should I just go "feel free to try" or teach? etc.

You wanna draw a crowed. You explain the basics on the game (each different mode) and show what they can do. Bring up the history of the game as well (How it started, etc etc etc.) I'll PM you all what we did.

There's a lot you can say about this game, really.

There are simple things like what the game is but you can talk about the community, collaborations, storyboarding, input techniques, heck even some of the controversies of osu (speedranking, osz2, etc.).

If you want someone to try out osu though make sure you have some form of instruction manual somewhere for them to use.

Just run big black, put it on huge screen, and play it with FC, I think everyone will come to you, or just recruit some osu!mania 7k player, and make him play any map.
Jenny
you should worry about copyright etc., as osu! does not have licenses for the songs mapped - thus, either prepare copyright free music (Erik McClure, Lapfox etc. for example) OR cancel the idea - what kind of convention is it and do you plan to have some full, huge place or are you keeping it to a smaller crowd?

just make sure you consider this properly before starting something

Thanks for the advice everyone. For music I'll probably stick to Touhou stuff then... though it should be okay if I play copyrighted music - I mean, they do stuff like showing anime all the time.

I'd probably just have a few interested people, wouldn't be too big.

ZUN refuses to let people use his works for rhythm games as osu!stream, so I don't know if that's a good idea either - just pointing that out to be considered.
XPJ38
ZUN refuses that his works are sold, and that was the case for some of them in osu!stream, not in osu! so that shouldn't be a problem.

Anyway, out of curiosity, where would that convention be?

I'm hoping to host these at cons in Vancouver. Of course, I still need to be approved first..

tip: don't use only touhou songs, have more variety to get more people interested
if possible, use your direct to get songs instantly?

Not only, just primary focus after attempts to get attention, I think. Also there's no internet so I won't be able to get new songs at all.

Sorry to bump this, but just wanted to say that it's confirmed, they've accepted my proposal and I'll be doing it for sure :D

Cool...

Good luck with the con!

You might wanna post details here once it's finalised so players in canada can attend.

I hope you take lots of pictures and record video footage.

^^" If I can, I probably won't be able to record myself though so I'd have to hope someone in the audience does.
