Hello Dota players, Im actually LoL player. Can someone say me why should I change and play DoTa? THX for your time guys
yeahyeahyeahhh
Because it's a better game? IDK if you're going to get a non-biased answer here. Try it out, if you like it play it, if not stay with LoL.

I've played a few games and have a few questions.

How "good" are the recommended items? Is it better to start with a relatively expensive item (like boots) and one tango vs tango, salve, and branches?
Is smartcast the same in DOTA as in LoL?
Is early game generally the same as LoL (afk farm)?
What are some mid/lategame objectives besides towers/Roshan?
Is it better to focus on farming or ganking/killing heroes?
Is there some way to teleport to fountain instead of walking back and forth?
What's the most common/widely accepted metagame?
I think killing Roshan is very high risk/medium reward. Am I missing something?
Are the roles generally similar between DOTA/LoL? For example, does the support still get 0 CS and buy all the wards etc etc

tl;dr - I'm a noob at this game and am asking questions that are probably blatantly obvious to most of you

Recommended items, for the most part are pretty accurate, there are a few exceptions for example, if a hero isn't recommended to buy a BKB, and you're fighting against a team with an SK or Enigma or some form of massive aoe, buying that BKB fairly quickly might be a wise idea no matter what hero you're playing. i would never ever recommend buying boots as a first item, huge sign of a player that doesn't know what he's doing, and the gain from those boots is extremely small, getting branches and appropriate amount of regen will keep your pressence in the lane much higher, i can only think of a few times where early boots pays off (trying to get first blood as jugg/CM for example).

Since im not an LoL player at all, i wont compare whether or not it's the same, i will just tell you that early game, support heroes harass and keep vision up, carries farm, and gankers gank, to sum it up simply.

The mid/late game objective is to give your carry as much farm as possibly, while shutting down their carries as much as possible, mid game is when the gankers role is at maximum potential, if you have a Tiny on your team he should be endlessly seeking action, while your carry ping-pongs back and forth from lane to lane, avoiding conflict and keeping CK high, obviously exceptions to that occur when you need to defend or help out with a teamfight that wont end in your favor without your carry being there. Towers are great but you don't need them to have good farm, they are the result or a won teamfight for the most part, to push you even further ahead of your opponents.

Teleport to fountain, or friendly towers by purchasing a scroll of town portal, have one on you at ALL times, they are seriously one of the best items in game.

I guess the most accepted metagame for pubs would be focusing on farming, and pushing when 1 or 2 enemy heroes are picked off. Pro games are a bit less action packed and more team-fight oriented, they focus majorly on CK more-so than team fights, for the most part.

Yeah, you're missing something about killing roshan, risk is only high if you choose to do it when the enemy team is alive, and their wards are up in the bottom river, Roshan is more of a reward for killing the enemy team, or if you can sneak in with a vlad farmed Ursa without them noticing. You can also bait a team fight by going for a roshan kill, but you better be confident in winning before doing that. The reward late game, is game changing.

- Recommended items are pretty much good to go with. Some aren't but they'll be fine in low tier games.
- There is no smartcast in DOTA
- No. Objectives are subjective to your team comp. Some team comps will be a tri-line to secure farm for your carry, or some with be for lots of early ganks and roaming. Some will be to push towers down extremely fast. As you become better at this game you will notice which comps are trying to enforce which actions.
- Mid game is generally about pushing and ganking. But again, subjective to what team you have IMO.
- For carries, its generally better to focus on getting as much CS as possible. You don't really want to stop CSing and try to gank/kill unless it will guarantee a kill. Supports have to pay more attention to the lane situation to know when its best to pull, harass, or gank. Supports should try to get any CS they can when nothing is going on and a free lane is open.
- Use a Teleport Scroll to go back if you don't want to walk. Always carry 1 (I try to carry 2 at all times).
- Metagame shifts all the time unlike LoL. Right now the current metagame is settled around pushing strats. I disagree with Soulclenz here, pro games are insane with action. Pubs are too but because of stupid stuff. You'll notice slight changes in metagames as you get up in skill tier.
- Secure vision on rosh by having sents and observer wards. Don't do it when you don't have vision unless multiple people are dead. You can use Smoke of Deceit to get around wards to sneak in. If all you enemies are top you can maybe sneak one in without confrontation. Just ensure vision and enemies are dead/not around and there's nothing really high risk about it.
- No, support is much less of a bitch role in DOTA than in LoL. Supports will still generally get many of the wards and less CS, but they're in no way succumbed to just sitting back, healing the carry, and watching youtube in lane. Supports tbh are one of the hardest class to play to it maximum potential. You have to be aware of situations a lot. You need to provide good vision, control the lane correctly with pull, known when to gank and how to do it properly, know how to keep a bit of farm up, correct positioning, and how to harass.

If you're serious about becoming better at this game, I recommend checking out the DoTA2 subreddit. Lots of good information over there from lots of good people. Also, good community discussions on heroes and items.

That's a solid build for SB, however i personally prefer to get bkb mid over madness, it's just safer, unless you're 100% sure you wont get switched and focused when you pop your MoM.

Good to hear, hopefully you haven't had a too bad experience with the community either, they tend to rage a lot at new players because the matchmaking is a bit screwed up right now.

Mashley might be the first person I've seen that has enjoyed the game playing solo haha, most people can't stand solo queuing. Or are you playing with friends Mashley?

I've had a good experience with the matchmaking, I haven't encountered any rudeness at all so far. Once I'd learned the ropes from my first game I never felt like I was hindering the team. A lot better than I had when I was trying to learn CS:GO lol.

I had the luck to get carried in a tournament by Dignitas ComeWithMe and win a beta key so if anyone wants someone to play with I'm probably up for it :)

If anyone would like to party up sometimes in DOTA 2, would be awesome. I can play on US East & Europe (maybe even US West, I haven't tried though). 0-10? ahah dang, poor guy. Curious though, since a SS should be able to at least hold his own without death against a drow mid, especially at 6. Viper would probably be the better choice in the end though, yeah, even though a Drow and Viper going toe to toe with auto attacks would be very close.

Voker pickers should burn in hell.
Icyteru
Voker isn't even imba, just that most players don't know what to do in situations against him.

seriously, most voker players use the shittiest combo alive, which is emp + tornado, and still rape the majority of pubs. Facepalm.

Venomancer is my most successful hero though, 7-1, lost once but that game was really, really, really close, went on for 60 minutes.

Huskar is my next successful hero, at 6-3.

All of the other heroes are either 2-0, 2-1, 2-2, 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 0-1, 0-2. I play every hero in dota, so yea, I only ever counterpick when I want to win.

However, I feel that the funnest hero is actually sniper. I go Take aim + Headshot > Assasinate > Stats, since shrapnel is considered the worst spell. He is fun cause he requires a lot of skill to play, like abuse of mechanics, epic positioning, etc.

I kind of disagree with that. I started playing with Sniper as my first hero, and was able to pull of a double kill on my first game as him.
I don't think you need a lot of skill to play as him at all. Pretty much aim from afar and run whenever someone gets close.

Mad Invoker-haters are mad.
Well, but if I were a non-Invoker player I'd agree, he's damn imba and is, if not the best, one of the heroes who scalest very strong.
He's imba throurough the game, got the most spells and can pwn about everyone solo as long as they don't have BKBs or sth.
Those who do EMP-Tornado-Cold Snap only on Invoker just waste his potential by a crazy lot as still 7 skills would be left unused.

If you can, then he's damn fun to play and pretty much rapes every game.
+ About that patch, saying Exort Invoker will be the new era of his, that's not true IMO. Sure, Sun Strike is pure dmg (and it's very fun to play Exort Invoker and snipe them with SS :D) and Meteor got dmg buff, but that doesn't nerf the Wex-effect with more MS and AS.
Tornado + EMP combo and Tornado itself is a bit worse too but as long as you don't stand F in maths you can somewhat calculate when the enemy will be hit by EMP if the hero comes down from Tornado.

+ @Sniper
Well yeah, as long as the enemy does nothing but ignore you you sure can just own with him. Otherwise you need map awareness and good positioning in fight or they will just pick you off...

holy jesus christ you sound so bad.
invoker isnt imba? have you seen his lane presence? surely something that incredibly strong would have some form of weakness later on in the game? not invoker, and with his bulky stat gain he is not even squishy anymore, so sure you can silence him but hes not exactly like storm or clinkz in terms of being easy to pick off. he has 10 spells, and so many of them (coldsnap, tornado, sunstrike) are some of THE best spells in the game. he is simply too powerful, at all levels.
as for your sniper skill build, i thought it was a joke at first. the fact that you dont even get shrapnel is a joke. also, you should max range at early game, keeping headshot at level one, as the improvements are insignificant, and secondly max shrapnel. and no, despite how badly you want to convince yourself of this, sniper is not ranked as a skillful hero to play, infact he is one of the most notorious right clickers, all you need is a good mindset and positioning (stay back, fuck that sounds really hard)

The funny thing is, I'm not bad. True, me saying invoker isn't imba or my sniper build is not "recommended" is highly debatable, however I am not bad.

I used to be like you. I used to think invoker was imbalanced due to all the points you made. If this was me before I started playing competitive, I would agree with you. I understand why you think I'm bad, however, it all comes with experience.

You probably play really well, probably being able to dominate most games and have core knowledge about the game.

However, I have my reasons for saying so. The truth is, invoker is one of the easiest heroes to play to a high potential. He just has too many skills for every situation. That doesn't make him imbalanced though.

A person that can play sniper to his full potential will probably be able to beat a good invoker player.

Oh, and have a look at shrapnel. JUST LOOK AT IT. It is the worst scaling damage, slow, and aoe you can possibly get in a skill. It doesn't help him farm, or even less kill. Let's say you are accompanied with a stun. What will shrapnel do?

and now you say sniper is the most notorious right clicker in the game. Exactly, that is what makes him hard and fun to play. He can't do much, he can only right click. Unlike voker, he doesn't have stun, nuke, etc. When was the last time you have seen a sniper dominate a pub game? And now when was the last time you have seen invoker dominate a pub game? Sniper is considered shit-tier in pub games because he has a low success rate, and invoker is considered "imba" because, contrary to popular belief, even if you suck, you can still do well and not feed.

Oh, I wasn't being disrespectful by the way. Everyone can have their own item/skill builds since dota is just that type of game, but I am arguing my point of view here.

And just another thing, everyone has their own way of playing, not many people play with my style of unconventional builds, but they work. They work better than the conventional builds. You would not know how much satisfaction one (me) gets when your whole team rages at you for jungle SF, and then you proceed to carry your team. (note: Jungle SF works, so does blink dagger weaver.) One does not simply theorycraft in dota, you gotta try it to see if it works.

PS: Ursa is overpowered.
EDIT:

1: I never said invoker wasn't that good. I said invoker wasn't imbalanced.

2: Playing sniper to his maximum potential is fucking difficult

EDIT 2:

Okay, I just reread my post and I realised I sound like an aggressive troll. However, I just wanted to express my passion for this game.

How about we just drop this imbalance subject and discuss the new item icons and UI.

DotA 2-potm cracks me up every time, the arrows flies like up his ass and he still dodges that shit!
But well, she's still a good hero, if you play her properly she can start getting game-deciding throughout the game but just not as extreme as some others, kinda like a Allround-hero. What I hate when ppl play her is when they do 24/7 farm = = Sure, it's good for a carry but she needs to put out her mid-game impact with her over 9k nuke dmg :|

ED : Here's a good example. Take a look at 2:30 How could that not hit !? Not like I dislike LightOfHeaven, but he got some big bug-profit that game !
