- Recommended items are pretty much good to go with. Some aren't but they'll be fine in low tier games.kanye west wrote:
I've played a few games and have a few questions.
How "good" are the recommended items? Is it better to start with a relatively expensive item (like boots) and one tango vs tango, salve, and branches?
Is smartcast the same in DOTA as in LoL?
Is early game generally the same as LoL (afk farm)?
What are some mid/lategame objectives besides towers/Roshan?
Is it better to focus on farming or ganking/killing heroes?
Is there some way to teleport to fountain instead of walking back and forth?
What's the most common/widely accepted metagame?
I think killing Roshan is very high risk/medium reward. Am I missing something?
Are the roles generally similar between DOTA/LoL? For example, does the support still get 0 CS and buy all the wards etc etc
tl;dr - I'm a noob at this game and am asking questions that are probably blatantly obvious to most of you
- There is no smartcast in DOTA
- No. Objectives are subjective to your team comp. Some team comps will be a tri-line to secure farm for your carry, or some with be for lots of early ganks and roaming. Some will be to push towers down extremely fast. As you become better at this game you will notice which comps are trying to enforce which actions.
- Mid game is generally about pushing and ganking. But again, subjective to what team you have IMO.
- For carries, its generally better to focus on getting as much CS as possible. You don't really want to stop CSing and try to gank/kill unless it will guarantee a kill. Supports have to pay more attention to the lane situation to know when its best to pull, harass, or gank. Supports should try to get any CS they can when nothing is going on and a free lane is open.
- Use a Teleport Scroll to go back if you don't want to walk. Always carry 1 (I try to carry 2 at all times).
- Metagame shifts all the time unlike LoL. Right now the current metagame is settled around pushing strats. I disagree with Soulclenz here, pro games are insane with action. Pubs are too but because of stupid stuff. You'll notice slight changes in metagames as you get up in skill tier.
- Secure vision on rosh by having sents and observer wards. Don't do it when you don't have vision unless multiple people are dead. You can use Smoke of Deceit to get around wards to sneak in. If all you enemies are top you can maybe sneak one in without confrontation. Just ensure vision and enemies are dead/not around and there's nothing really high risk about it.
- No, support is much less of a bitch role in DOTA than in LoL. Supports will still generally get many of the wards and less CS, but they're in no way succumbed to just sitting back, healing the carry, and watching youtube in lane. Supports tbh are one of the hardest class to play to it maximum potential. You have to be aware of situations a lot. You need to provide good vision, control the lane correctly with pull, known when to gank and how to do it properly, know how to keep a bit of farm up, correct positioning, and how to harass.
If you're serious about becoming better at this game, I recommend checking out the DoTA2 subreddit. Lots of good information over there from lots of good people. Also, good community discussions on heroes and items.
