By claiming BP, you essentially say, "If you kill me, your kill will be wasted." but as town, you want kills to be wasted.
By claiming vig, you set yourself up as a NK target, but by claiming BP, you ruin the chances of a NK being wasted.

Basically claiming vig alone was a good tactic, but claiming vig and BP is a questionable tactic.
