It's completely noticeable, too, not even just a slight compression. According to Microsoft, it was to decrease boot time, which it does, by a few seconds. Also, I aligned the maximum quality .jpg on a layer on top of the .png perfectly, and toggled visibility of that layer to compare the two. There was no difference, from what I could tell; it was as if I wasn't toggling visibility of the layer at all.

Like that "benchmark" showed (I Know you loved them stragy), with bigger images, the different in size can be very big.
I could upload if you want and I can bet you anything that you would not be able to distuingish the PNG from the JPG12 (not even from the jpg11 or jpg10).

Nice job derailing this topic. I'm sure I'd care about that jpg thing if I actually used wallpaper on my windows box. This request was for my os x machine (thus the horribly low resolution) for the record. Also "pretty lossless" != "lossless". If I see a single jpeg artifact I would swap wallpapers. Each to their own etc.

My macbook dithers even on external displays (ilu apple) so I can't really tell or fix stuff like that unless I'm at my desktop. Go for your life though (PM'd).

Imgur is best from what I've used although there is a 2mb limit and depending on how large a PNG is (Width x Height) it will compress it to a JPEG. If your gonna push huge raw PNG's I'd use Deviant Art as a dump source since they'll let you churn out 20mb+ PNG's and hotlink them.
