I lost the .psd for my previously posted wallpaper, so I re-created it.
Also, I fixed some stuff I saw were wrong in the first one, mostly the max resolution (now at 1980x1200) and the horrible, horrible banding.

If anyone wants a different-colored background gradient or some weird aspect ratio, just note me.

If you're on Windows, then use the high quality .jpg instead of the .png, so Windows doesn't convert the image itself, which it does so at a low quality. 7 does this; I'm not sure about Vista.

Well, jpeg saved at highest quality is pretty lossless.
That, and Windows will convert it to .jpg if it's not already in it, and if it does it'll do so at a low quality. :/

Exactly. I had a dumb computerscience project once that had me comparing the size/quality of different image formats at different sizes and for different types of images (photograph, vector art, plain color image, etc).

Exept paint in xp that has the worst jpg compression ever, usually jpg with quality 90%+ has almost no visual different from lossless PNG and ends up having a way smaller file size (I though you cared about bw peppy) than PNG. But for images with smaller palette of color and more simple unicolor shapes, PNGs are usually the way to go.

Bike == vector art, Shoe == Photograph

If it wasn't in Vista, then I didn't notice it.

It's completely noticeable, too, not even just a slight compression. According to Microsoft, it was to decrease boot time, which it does, by a few seconds. Also, I aligned the maximum quality .jpg on a layer on top of the .png perfectly, and toggled visibility of that layer to compare the two. There was no difference, from what I could tell; it was as if I wasn't toggling visibility of the layer at all.

Use Difference. Does it show any non-black pixels? If so, it's not lossless.

Like that "benchmark" showed (I Know you loved them stragy), with bigger images, the different in size can be very big.
I could upload if you want and I can bet you anything that you would not be able to distuingish the PNG from the JPG12 (not even from the jpg11 or jpg10).

On a osu background at 1280x1024 (Which is max I beleive?), the different will easily be in the 1-2mbs, which in a song file, can be alot.

Ofcourse, for smaller images, size isn't important at all, thats why all my signatures are PNGs. But when you make a site background with a big gradient, you usually don't want a 2-3mb file.

Same goes for FLAC. I would never use it for a 3hour conferance speech with no music in it. Each format has it's own use. There's a reason why if they are all still alive.

Nice job derailing this topic. I'm sure I'd care about that jpg thing if I actually used wallpaper on my windows box. This request was for my os x machine (thus the horribly low resolution) for the record. Also "pretty lossless" != "lossless". If I see a single jpeg artifact I would swap wallpapers. Each to their own etc.

Also I'd still listen to a conference in FLAC, but let's stop this before I delete this thread out of its stupidity. (take this as a warning ph0x).

My macbook dithers even on external displays (ilu apple) so I can't really tell or fix stuff like that unless I'm at my desktop. Go for your life though (PM'd).

Assuming you're using Windows (and if you're not you're sure to know enough about resizing images by yourself), there is a powerful tool you can use to resize my wallpapers by custom width from a right click menu option provided by Prish Image Resizer. Using this tool you can resize an image by width, for example a 1920x1200 image to 1680x1050:

Yeah, as I said I didn't make it. Cropping it was very easy as all I did was remove the task bar and very few icons on the left by putting a black box on top of them and BAM. Instant original from someone else's work.

Imgur is best from what I've used although there is a 2mb limit and depending on how large a PNG is (Width x Height) it will compress it to a JPEG. If your gonna push huge raw PNG's I'd use Deviant Art as a dump source since they'll let you churn out 20mb+ PNG's and hotlink them.
