.flow is a fangame, not a spiritual successor. And it uses Yume Nikki like a cheat sheet, it follows its structure about as exactly as a game could get. It's still good, but a lot shorter and more linear. There's also far less to discover.
And I think Earthbound meets Silent Hill is a poor description.

For me it would be F.E.A.R 1 and F.E.A.R 2, there were some scenes that were pretty crazy in F.E.A.R 2..but the F.E.A.R 3 that came out some time ago was quite the disappointment unfortunately :(

Things such as 3-Dimensional games scared the hell out of me for some parts when I was younger (Even though looking back now it wasn't even scary at all nor was it gory) but now I'm older I've actually started to became interested in horror games. But anyway, not sure if this counts but Saya no Uta can get real scary at times. Pretty good atmosphere in that.

Saya no Uta was a wonderful story though; There is no truly happy end, which is quite unusual for a story these days.

Currently reading Kara no Shoujo, that has some gruesome parts in it which make me cringe, but it doesn't really count as scary.

Silent Hill. All the way.

For me, it should be Parasite eve for the PSX. ...It was around 10 years ago.

Now I feel numb when playing these kind of games. Sigh.

The first Silent Hill game was the most scariest thing ever to me when I tried it for the first time.
I was 6 years old I believe and I kept pausing the game every 5 seconds.

Amnesia all the way. I played it with Nharox simultaneously on skype (so we were at the same points at the same time and everything) and it was still scary as fuck. "Eh... eh... OH GOD I'M HEARING SOMETHING oh no those were my own footsteps... oh god nharox tell me when you went into that room i don't want to go there alone ;_;" "Why don't you go ahead for once?" "...;______;"

And don't tell me that I ruined the game by playing it with someone on skype. I screamed all the time, which means it was scary enough :< If I had played it alone I'd probably have gotten so scared after the first few rooms that I'd never have touched the game again. I'm a pussy, sir.

I honestly don't understand what makes Amnesia such a scary game to people.

Because of the ambiance it creates. I personally did find the score chilling and the lighting to be rather instrumental in this, but then again I overanalyze the fuck out of things.

It's not the scariest thing I've ever played, but I will admit that playing through it recently creeped me out a bit. I prefer an oppressive atmosphere in my horror games to straight-up scares (but a mix of both a la Fatal Frame 2 is great).

I have recently been playing Amnesia face close to the screen, volume up, lights out, nobody else around. I am not easily scared, especially by software (due to my background) but I can understand why people get scared playing Amnesia. Especially when one of the game mechanics is to bury yourself behind crates or closets, stare at a corner, and hope everything turns out alright.

It is quite atmospheric and after that first fucking lever I started finding myself immersed (apart from the water segment early on, that kind of pulled me out)

When I was younger Majora's Mask for sure, now I'd say its that creepy game with those dark hallways and stuff jumps at you from nowhere...quiet/silent something? I think someone knows what I'm talking about..

eh, none of 'em have that aviation-style hair from what I've seen, so it doesn't really look that bad in that respect. The SNES RM2K-style sprites I find a bit off-putting though.

Also: the more dialog/actors involved, the less scary it is

i remember when friends got drunk and decided to play nosferatu, i tihnk. scene with the coffin (basically right at the start of the game) made one of them run into the wall. yeah, playing horror games for lulz is awesome :P
