I have never really played any scary games, beacuse well.. I don't like them.
Since Resident Evil 4 and 5 aren't scary you can't count those.
Also played Eternal Darkness for like 5mins and that was enough.

But I tend to watch if someone else plays. (IRL or in the Internet)
Penumbra series and Amnesia are pretty creepy stuff.

Penumbra, that game is absolutely horrifying.

I also remember being scared by Obscure, I played that game co-op with a friend and I still remember how we both jumped out of our seats when the first(I think) boss jumped out at us through the wall. xD

Majora's mask. Hack or not, it's d*nm freaky. Along with Pokemon creepy black, although it was a hack.

My first PC game happened to be Doom 1
on my cousin's PC. I was about 6 (Since my second game
was AoE 2 and I was 7 at that time).
I was always scared when I played it but
I somehow enjoyed cocking the gun and putting a hole through
what appeared to be a scary monster.
There are some other games I played when I got older
but I was never as frightened as I was when I was playing Doom.

My bro made me play some RE game and some Silent Hill game, both on the Wii. I found those kinda creepy.

For games I've played on my own? Easily MapleStory. It scared me because I was 13 and it was my first time on real-time chat things like that, and I learned just how cruel people could be just because you couldn't beat them up.

SH3 had a fair share of frightening moments, at least when first playing the game. Personally, this is one of the more memorable ones:

Manhunt is intense in its buildup, but it ends up awful towards the end. Also, a ban in certain countries does not mean it is frightening.

+1 again to Silent Hill 2 and Fatal Frame.

Also I saw Amnesia mentioned before, and that one's on there too. Amnesia is freaked me to the point that I was physically incapable of playing it. Like "couldn't move my hands to exit the game" incapable. And I'm normally quite badass with horror games.
In all cases, my wife has yelled at me for screeching like a frightened child. The first Fatal Frame doubly so as I didn't even touch the controller, just watching other people play it.

I am a wuss at heart :c

F.E.A.R anyone? It's hardly imposing if you play it in the day. I deliberately played in total darkness at 1:00am for the feel. Try it.

Been playing Fatal Frame 4 recently. It's pretty crazy when I play by myself, lights off and surround sound. Just did it twice and it gets pretty damn creepy. None of the RE or Silent Hill series has creeped me out that much. The Wii-mote being the flashlight adds to the whole "it's like you're really there" feel as well.

Silent Hill 3 is by far the scariest game I have ever played, followed up by Portal. I know, Portal, wtf right? Game scared the SHIT out of me though, like for real.

Shadowrun for the SNES. The worst part was that at that age I was smart enough to progress in that game, and the characters were ugly, the storyline wasn't kid friendly, and it became more eerie the longer I got through the game. I was training a guy to kill people instead of training Mario to use a hammer in Mario RPG (Legend of the Seven Stars). Not the best game for a kid to pick up, at least not a kid like me and at that age.

Uhhh... I don't often play horror themed games, but when i first played Devil May Cry 1 when i was about 10, and it was dark, and i was home alone, and the marionettes fell from the ceiling... damn, I was afraid of even opening the case of the game, never mind playing it xD

Wether the Majoras mask thing was real or not the story itself is creepy lol, I read the whole thing and it was a fun little read that's for sure.

Anyway the scariest game I ever played was The Suffering, just what was wrong with that game?

For me, the entire Silent Hill series (yes, even the arcade rail shooter) was scary. Amnesia: The Dark Descent is up there with Silent Hill, followed closely behind by F.E.A.R & Dead Space.

But for something completely different, how would you like to be scared by SNES-type games? Yume Nikki can only be described as EarthBound meets Silent Hill. It is quite creepy. Then there's .flow, the spiritual successor to Yume Nikki. It's worse than Yume Nikki. Go google to have fun tonight.

Also, not sure if Visual Novels count as games, but Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni was one hell of a nightmare.

.flow is a fangame, not a spiritual successor. And it uses Yume Nikki like a cheat sheet, it follows its structure about as exactly as a game could get. It's still good, but a lot shorter and more linear. There's also far less to discover.
And I think Earthbound meets Silent Hill is a poor description.

For me it would be F.E.A.R 1 and F.E.A.R 2, there were some scenes that were pretty crazy in F.E.A.R 2..but the F.E.A.R 3 that came out some time ago was quite the disappointment unfortunately :(

Things such as 3-Dimensional games scared the hell out of me for some parts when I was younger (Even though looking back now it wasn't even scary at all nor was it gory) but now I'm older I've actually started to became interested in horror games. But anyway, not sure if this counts but Saya no Uta can get real scary at times. Pretty good atmosphere in that.

Saya no Uta was a wonderful story though; There is no truly happy end, which is quite unusual for a story these days.

Currently reading Kara no Shoujo, that has some gruesome parts in it which make me cringe, but it doesn't really count as scary.

For me, it should be Parasite eve for the PSX. ...It was around 10 years ago.

The first Silent Hill game was the most scariest thing ever to me when I tried it for the first time.
I was 6 years old I believe and I kept pausing the game every 5 seconds.

Amnesia all the way. I played it with Nharox simultaneously on skype (so we were at the same points at the same time and everything) and it was still scary as fuck. "Eh... eh... OH GOD I'M HEARING SOMETHING oh no those were my own footsteps... oh god nharox tell me when you went into that room i don't want to go there alone ;_;" "Why don't you go ahead for once?" "...;______;"

And don't tell me that I ruined the game by playing it with someone on skype. I screamed all the time, which means it was scary enough :< If I had played it alone I'd probably have gotten so scared after the first few rooms that I'd never have touched the game again. I'm a pussy, sir.

Good mentions all-around. I'll add one that wouldn't ever really be called scariest ever, but interesting regardless. Horror RPG that's scheduled for release sometime next year on PSP, Corpse Party.
