The song's history, if anyone's interested.
Unlike most theme songs from Studio Ghibli films, "Hikoukigumo" was actually written way back in 1973 by Yuming (Yumi Matsutoya), back when she was still known as Yumi Arai. Yuming wrote this song for a dear friend of hers who she had known since Elementary school. The two grew up together, but her friend was constantly away from school due to her illness. At the age of 14, Yuming began her singing career, leaving her small town behind. She traveled to various cities, bringing her iconic voice with her. It wasn't until Yuming was 16 that she finally returned to her hometown of Hachioji. However, when she went to her friend's house to visit, she was greeted instead, by a shrine and news that her friend had succumbed to her illness. In her sadness, Yuming wrote Hikoukigumo - the first song she ever released.
