Genre and language
Genre and language are listed on beatmap pages.
Beatmaps submitted to the website have genre and language fields to help categorise songs. They are considered to be part of a beatmap's metadata.
Genre and language have no function in the game, but will be available as search options in osu!(lazer).
Beatmap listing
The beatmap listing has filters available for genre and language in the More Search Options dropdown.
Changing a beatmap's genre and language
Genre and language can be changed on the website by clicking the pencil icon when hovering over a beatmap's details. The ability to do so is determined by the user's user groups and the beatmap's category:
- Mapset owners are allowed when the beatmap is in the WIP, Pending, or Graveyard categories, and does not have any nominations.
- Beatmap Nominators are allowed when the beatmap is in the Qualified, WIP, or Pending categories.
- Project Loved Team members are allowed when the beatmap is in the Loved category.
- Nomination Assessment Team and Global Moderation Team members are allowed for all categories.
A beatmap is unable to be nominated if it has the Unspecified genre or language.

| Unspecified | No songs are applicable. This genre is a placeholder until a proper one is set. |
| Video Game | Made for or made popular by a video game. This is also used for arrangements and remixes of those songs. |
| Anime | Made for or made popular by an anime or similar medium. |
| Rock | Mostly focusing on guitars, drums, and bass, typically "built on a foundation of simple syncopated rhythms" and characterised by "live performance and a focus on serious and progressive themes" (Rock music on Wikipedia). |
| Pop | Prominent in pop culture, and composed to be catchy by use of simple structure and repeated choruses or melodies. |
| Other | Not belonging to any of the listed genres. |
| Novelty | Comical or unusual. In osu!, this category primarily includes songs like YouTube Poops, Niconico MADs, and meme music. |
| Hip Hop | "Stylised rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping," sometimes "sampling beats or bass lines from records" (Hip hop music on Wikipedia). |
| Electronic | Composed digitally or with electronic instruments. |
| Metal | Having a heavy sound, making use of loud and distorted electric guitars and bass, and containing fast or dense drum rhythms. |
| Classical | Formal, structured around advanced musical theory, and having roots in old western culture or taking inspiration from it. |
| Folk | Traditional or personal, casual, and reflecting the identity of a culture or group of people. |
| Jazz | Focusing on improvisation and borrowing African and Cuban rhythmic styles. Typically features pianos and instruments that would be used in marching bands. |
