Community Mentorship Program

2016 Winter Cycle

Hello everyone, Yuii- here once again!

The Community Mentorship program is a way for new and learning mappers to get into the mapping community by having a more experienced mapper and modder help them on their way.

Along with Okorin, I now present the second cycle of the Mentorship Program (see the first 2016 cycle here).

Program Details
  1. This program is standard only. If you want to host a mode-specific program like this, contact me!
  2. This program operates on a 10+2 week cycle basis (10 weeks for the program, final 2 weeks buffer time, 2 weeks are added to this for this cycle due to the Christmas period). During this timespan a mentor is bound to a mentee. The buffer time is used for reorganisation, reflection and simply taking a break.
  3. Everything regarding this program is organised in one Discord server. Hint: get Discord.
  4. Cycles culminate in a small-scale mapping event. Each mentor-mentee pair will present a map they created within the cycle to illustrate the progress they made during the program.
  5. Mentor/Mentee pairings are free to continue for more than one cycle. These mentors may not be eligible this cycle unless they want to take on more mentees than in the previous cycle (specified below).
  6. Mentor/Mentee pairings are free to part ways within the buffer time. In case they do not get along there is no reason to force anyone. These scenarios are evaluated on a case-by-case basis while aiming to not leave any mentee behind for no reason.
  7. You must not be restricted from osu! when signing up for this program in any role. If you got yourself into a situation like this we do not deem you as suitable for participating in a program of this nature.
  8. The only roles that are mutually exclusive are mentor and mentee. This means any other combination such as Helper/Mentee, Helper/Mentor are valid.
  9. The following deadlines are fixed, there will not be any exceptions to these:
    1. Mentor sign-ups start on 30.09.2016 and end on 15.10.2016 0:00 UTC+0.
    2. Mentee sign-ups start on 16.10.2016 and end on 30.10.2016 0:00 UTC+0.
    3. This cycle starts on 30.10.2016 and ends on 05.02.2017 UTC+0.

If you have troubles with timezones, this page should give you a general idea of how this works.

Mentor Criteria
  1. Mentors joining this cycle may choose one mentee while mentors from the previous cycle may choose two if they wish to. This is necessary because mentors from previous cycles have proven to be able to commit to the program while newcomers have not.
  2. Mentors who were removed from the program for any reason will not be reconsidered unless there are special circumstances. If your behaviour / general absence / lack of commitment gives us reasons to remove you will need convincing reasons to come back.
  3. You should have more than 2 hours a week at your disposal for this program. Explaining and discussing mapping related things tends to take time.
  4. Each applicant will be considered on a case-by-case basis. We reserve the right to choose who will be mentoring in this program and will explain denials accordingly if prompted to.
  5. You should …
    1. have ranked osu! beatmaps of any kind as they indicate experience with the process as well as giving/taking constructive criticism.
    2. have encountered mentoring or teaching previously. Experience never hurts.
    3. have a predictable schedule. So that the chances of you suddenly disappearing without any traces are low.
    4. have a more or less clean record. People who are known for bad behaviour in the recent past should reconsider their behaviour before taking a teaching position.

Note that none of these above are criteria that would 100% exclude you if you do not fulfill them fully. This is still a case-by-case evaluation.

Mentee Criteria
  1. Prior mentees who want to be part of the program again can only do so for four times in total. This equals about a year of being on the program which should be more than enough time to get into the mapping community.
  2. Mentees who were removed from the program for any reason will not be reconsidered unless there are special circumstances. If your behaviour / general absence / lack of commitment gives us reasons to remove you will need convincing reasons to come back.
  3. Each applicant is eligible for any mentor. If a mentor who was not your first or second choice wants to mentor you, we will notify you.
  4. You should invest more time than your mentor into the program. Given that they are supposed to help you make progress this entire thing only works if you actively work on it.
  5. You must be able to take criticism. You are here because you aim to improve how you map so therefore taking criticism is necessary. Familiarise yourself with the Code of Conduct for Mapping and Modding on the Ranking Criteria to know what this means.
  6. Your availability and timezone should match the mentors you are applying for. This is recommended due to being easier for both parties.

Application Process

Due to the amount of confusion this process seems to cause among applicants, what follows is a process description:
  1. People willing to be mentees will apply via the form on this thread and end up in a spreadsheet.
  2. The mentors will be able to see all applications, because they can choose anyone that shows interest in the program according to their own criteria.
    1. Most Mentors look for someone that wants to be mentored by them.
    2. Some proceed according to their own, different criteria.
  3. Mentors may start making their choices starting two days after applications open. Because making a choice for this matter excludes other applicants we aim to minimize the amount of denied people on the expense of not giving some the choice to apply to that mentor due to being late. In that regard this process is first come first serve.
  4. As an applicant you can apply multiple times if you wish to update your application. Among giving more reasoning for some points other reasons to apply again would be that the mentors that you wished for chose someone else. Only your latest application will be considered.
  5. After a mentor selected their mentee, the potential mentee will be notified about this and invited into the Discord server via forum PM. May also be a PM via Discord. People who were chosen by a mentor they did not put as their first or second choice will receive a PM asking if they wish to join as the mentee of that mentor instead.

Helpers Needed

Due to the sheer size of the project, we do need helping hands to keep track of everything. We are currently at around 50 people who need to be kept track of to ensure that we notice problems within the program. The tasks for a helper involve the following:

  1. help keeping track of activities by poking a few participants of the program on a regular basis.
  2. discuss problem cases to ensure reasonable decisions and calls.
  3. help organising / planning Discord-internal events.
  4. be a contact person for organisation related questions.

If you are interested in helping out, drop me or Okorin a PM!

Code of Conduct
  1. As a mentor, do not resort to using authority over rational arguments. If you find yourself doing this you probably do not have good arguments to begin with. Treat everyone equally instead of assuming authority.
  2. Repeated misbehaviour on the Discord server can and will get you excluded. Though you really have to try our patience for us to do that.
  3. Make sure to drop us a message if you happen to have some things coming up which will impact your activity. Not that we are interested in your personal lives too much, we just happen to keep track of activity and progress so you disappearing without anyone knowing you did causes confusion.
  4. Please report violations of the Code of Conduct for Mapping and Modding if you encounter them. We investigate cases individually will take measures accordingly. We just cannot act if we do not know what is going on, though.

In addition, we have opened a thread in the General Questions forum for suggestions for amendments to what we have right now.

Mentor List

- more detailed spreadsheet version -

This time we will have two separate lists, as different things apply for both categories. Mentors that stay from last cycle may choose up to two mentees, if they wish so and mentors that join will be choosing one mentee only.
Every mentor speaks English unless noted otherwise.

How to Read These Lists
  1. The lists are sorted the following way: timezone->country->alphabetical
  2. The format of the short information listing is: timezone | additional languages | availability | Mentee(s): <Number indicates how many additional mentees they search>
  3. The availability estimate for each mentor applies to their respective timezone.
  4. equals no additional language

Statistics

upon popular request, here's a bit of trivia.

How many applications are in so far?
72

How are preferences distributed so far?
As expected, pretty unevenly. here's a rundown on the most popular choices as of now (these are total amounts of mentions):
  1. Shiirn is at 16
  2. handsome is at 13
  3. pkk is at 12
  4. EvilElvis, Okorin, Kibbleru are at 10
Note that all of these can only choose one mentee and will probably likely start doing so soon.

Hi again!

Small update:

How many applications are in so far?

180

Other facts:

  1. Nozhomi, Okorin, EvilElvis and Smoothie World, Come[Back]Home, pkk, Stjpa, viptwo, MrSergio, handsome, Kin, Tari, Shiirn, Pho, -Mo-, Kibbleru, Seikatu, Lasse, Andrea, Zetera have already chosen their mentees.
  2. There are some mentors that still have not been mentioned or have only 1 mention.

Guys, when applying please read the post above. Some people are still applying for mentors that have already selected their mentees. Read the rules carefully! I will still be updating the post above (which is mine too heh) as long as mentors do not select their mentees.
Kibbleru
im still looking for a perfect mentee :d
IamKwaN
if a mentee is perfect, they don't need a mentor orz
Okoratu
Mentors with over 10 mentions:
  1. over 20:Shiirn, Monstrata
  2. over 15: Kibbleru
  3. over 10: -Mo-
that being said the rest of the available list is at less than 10 mentions so if you're wondering who to take, researching the names you are least familiar with is the way to go
Okoratu
As of now the only mentors that remain undecided are:
Natsu, Frostings, Battle, Monstrata, Xexxar, Atrue, Mystyk and Rizen.

Monstrata is at over 40 mentions (no, more applicants wont make his decision any easier)

Updating the other post via mobile is a pain, so Ill get to that later.

Hello everyone once again!

These 3 months have been outstanding for us. We thought of many new ideas that helped this cycle be great.

In total, since the cycle started, five mentees were able to get at least one ranked map (or difficulty); and I am sure than the rest of them will eventually get their maps ranked as well! During this cycle mentees were splitted in four different groups, in which they decided to map different music genres: Japanese, Instrumental, Drum and Bass, and Soundtracks. Make sure to give them a try if you are interested in seeing what they have done as part of the program!

During this second cycle we also made two speedmapping contests and four discussions. Unfortunately, mentees opted not to make the entries public, but I can assure you all that they had fun while participating in them! Regarding these discussions, they will be uploaded here soon, so stay tuned if you would like to read them.

Although, we did have, once again, people who got busy with their lives and/or lost interest in mapping; though I can say they all reached what they wanted: more experience and knowledge with everything mapping-related. From here, we wish them all a great time with whatever they are doing right now.

We are still trying to develop new ideas and projects for this program to make it better and better as the time goes on. As said, this cycle we had the speedmapping contests and during the third cycle we are going to have even more things to share with the community!

As always, I now want to thank everyone who participated thus far, and who helped us in this project. Big thanks to those who applied for both mentees/mentors. Big thanks to every mentee, for working really hard and always trying to improve by themselves. Big thanks to the mentors, for being so supportive towards their mentees and being patient. Big thanks to the helpers (J1NX1337, Exa, -kevincela-, -Moony-, Regraz, Chaos, Mir, MrSergio, Mao), for trying to make this program the best possible. And, of course, a huge shout out to Okorin for being extremely supportive as well as helping me with everything I needed; much appreciated.

That being said, I now announce the end of the second cycle of the Community Mentorship Program. Mentees’ applications will be opened starting in a couple of hours for the third cycle (February, 5th - 00:00 UTC+0) [Click here]. We hope to see you there!
