So since i get paid every Friday, I'm gonna giveaway some 1 year supporter tags, simply come to the thread on Friday until the end of May. There is no big restriction on the giveaway, just guess a number between 1-100 on Fridays only. Lets do some giveaways, shall we? I will pick the winner around 8 pm Central time in the U.S. and i will send a pm if you are the winner.

As a way to make it feel more worthwhile to everyone i guess, whoever wins will get a full year and the next 3 closest will get 3 months, 2 months, and a 1 month tag. So don't be afraid to come and guess you could still win

(No double guessing on the same week though.)

I'll restrain myself to the nature of fairness here, since talking about the value would be taking it a bit too far.



First we should define what society we are talking about, since a societal idea of fairness may differ from society to society. In some societies you'd expect fairness to be a very controversial topic, while in other societies, it'd be a very closed and agreed upon topic.
The "society" that we consider today is very interesting, because it is not really a society in the original sense, but rather an unstable collection of individuals that come from different societies. In other words: The osu forums, where many different nationalities and cultures are represented.



Since many of these cultures have been historically separated, they also derived different sets of values. Holding one over another would be a normative operation, which is not allowed since our inquiry is meant to be solely descriptive. Therefore, we can only look at things that all systems share to derive a meaningful definition of the nature of fairness. Now to define the nature of fairness, we have to analyze what each culture claims as their take on this abstract principle.



Fairness is a very intuitive and yet ill-defined term, as it lacks universality. Most Western systems of values dictate that equality of opportunity is fair, while Arabic systems of values might suggest inequality between the genders, Indian systems might suggest inequality between castes, and Eastern systems might suggest a difference in treatment based on your family-name. As seen here, even things that seem to be common sense for most people are violated in the spirit of other cultures fairness.



If you want to find wholesome commonalities between the systems you'd have to dig deeper, way deeper. You'd have to dig to a point where the commonalities are so fundamental, that our definition of the nature of fairness becomes tautological (e.g: The nature of fairness is that which people consider fair). I claim that all other attempts to define our target would violate the spirit of a solely descriptive definition.



Hence, a meaningful definition of the nature of fairness for this society is not posssible.
