As I've recently learned, making background images too small such as a 1x1 solid color can cause issues with thumbnails on the old website where the thumbnail will display as a white square rather than the color of the background image. This is still relevant today as those thumbnails are the same as the ones displayed in the in-game song select on stable.

To avoid the problem I suggest we have a minimum background resolution of 160x120, the same size as the thumbnail image.

realistically it should be at minimum 480 or 720p for quality (yellow memes aside)

could have guideline at 720p + rule at 160x120? cause some stuff doesn't absolutely need to be 720p to look ok.

or just a guideline for 720p

Wouldn't it make more sense to allow min size that doesn't break functionality?

rule for 120, then another sentence (or guideline w/e) for "as high quality as possible" ? I don't see the point of specifying an exact size for the guideline part

^agree

Imo only the rule is needed to prevent breaking stuff. What that guideline be usefull for? Mapper choose whatever background he wants, an extra line in RC won't really change minds and more likely won't be read by thoses who would benefit from it.

Also when clayton is going to starting using capital letters and dots?
clayton
usually a map's nominators are more careful about checking through RC to make sure the map complies with it. saying "nobody reads RC" isn't a valid reason for dismissing amendments...

is 4 capital letters and 4 dots good enough? :)

If the issue is that too small of a size affects thumbnails, the minimum size should be the absolute smallest size you can have without these problems occurring. at least thats what I think.

so probably 160x120 like noffy said

ok

so rule for minimum size makes sense but im wondering if anyone's ever tried to rank a map with such a tiny bg

if it hasnt happened idk if the rule has a point?

guideline for high quality is ok tho since there's been countless cases of people ranking maps with garbo bg when noticably better quality is available

I remember seeing 640x480 backgrounds when I check maps, I personally has used a 5--x4-- background and its quality is decent enough and tried to push it for rank (although it ultimately is changed to a different background with higher resolution).

Personally think it is possible for a tiny background (e.g. vector stuff), so the rule can be useful (?)
clayton
this thread was opened because someone had a 1x1 yellow bg for a map, right? regardless the rule for minimum is so the website doesn't break (and this seems like a sane minimum that external services can rely on too), it doesn't matter if anyone would try to do it or not

added guideline

- **A beatmap's background image should be of reasonable quality.** Try to find the original source of any image and avoid unnecessary upscaling or file size bloating.

and adjusted rule about bg requirements to be way simpler

- **Background image requirements:**
- **Minimum width:** 160px
- **Minimum height:** 120px
- **Maximum width:** 2560px
- **Maximum height:** 1440px
- **Maximum filesize:** 2.5MB
