Low scroll speed

Is low scroll speed okay? Currently mine is set to 10 and im playing low 3* maps with a few 4* passes. I play at 60 fps.

I'm wondering if this will affect me later on but currently I find the note density fine. Low scroll speed lets me learn the patterns better and mentally prepare my presses. It's way harder even if I bump it up to 11.

I notice a lot of pros using insanely high scroll speeds so I'm wondering if its for easier r300s or something.

youd do best to be able to read more than 1 scroll speed- it'll make your life easier on SV.

as for that speed in particular, it depends on the sizing of your skin (thin bars vs circles or arrows), but you might find that a speed of 10 is more difficult to read on higher densities (go play a 6star 4key stream map with nofail to get an idea of what im referring to).

ultimately if you find 10 a good speed to play at right now, i see no reason to mess with it until you've got a good reason to do so- learning a new scroll speed isnt that hard if your skin is setup properly for it.

The reason players tend towards using higher scroll speeds is that the higher the scroll speed is, the more spread out notes are. Many people find the visual density of lower scroll speeds much more difficult to read, to the point where they may be completely overwhelmed with the sheer number of objects at speeds much lower than they are used to.

The other benefit of high scroll speeds is that you do not have to predict note timing based on music nearly as much. With low speeds, when a note is close to the receptors at the bottom you need to use the music itself to get a good sense of the timing. With higher speeds, by the time a note is close to the receptor, it's time to hit it and there's less uncertainty about the exact timing needed.

So, we've covered the benefits of high speeds, but that still leaves the question of whether you would benefit or not. That's up to you to figure out. In any rhythm game, you will find players exceptionally good at reading low speeds, and some who are exceptionally good at reading high speeds. Most people fall somewhere in the middle. There's no right or wrong speed to use, so it comes down to finding what works best.

My approach for finding the right speed is to start relatively slow, and slowly increase my speed in a game as I get better at it. At lower difficulties, speed selection generally doesn't prevent me from playing anything, but once I get decent and I begin to play hard songs, I find there's a certain minimum speed I must use based on the density of the notes in the song. Once I know the minimum speed that makes things readable, I try to experiment a bit to find if I should stick with the bare minimum speed, or if going higher still helps. Once going higher stops helping, that's usually where I decide to stay.

Generally for me, there's a certain speed where anything higher than that hurts my ability to play, and I usually stick my scroll speed right at that speed. After a while of playing at that speed I lose the ability to play anything slower, and that becomes the speed I always use.

it also depends on your skin. with standard mania skin (which i wouldn't personally use with the bars in between but to each his own) scroll speed can be lower. if your skin is THICKer then your scroll speed usually should be a bit higher. in the end to each his own, if you don't have problems with it then you're fine. personally 10 sounds pretty low. ~14 is the minimum i've heard with good players iirc.

like i said before: if you like your current scroll speed, theres no real reason to change it until you have a reason to.

That said, 10 is pretty low on the yugen skin, im impressed you can read it at all

I used to play the piano so I guess im used to high note density and being able to look ahead by alot (low scroll speed).

It's also fairly evenly spaced where the top of one note almost touches the bottom of the other, or they are one note width apart kind of deal. So its pretty easy to tell which ones are 1/4 vs 1/2.

When you begin to increase in difficulty, the density might become a bit too much, but hey, whatever works for you is fine. I use 14 with flashlight mod, which apparently is a relatively low speed even for people who use FL.
