Hey everyone, I started mapping a few yeears back, but gave up, well technically I gave Osu up, because my computer went boom and after I got a new one totally forgot 'bout the game. Two years ago a friend of mine got me back, but that didn't hold for more than 4 months and I couldn't play it for a while, I was burned out.

Well last month I finally got back up, because I finally understood, that I shouldn't just give up, so I played again and got back to my inital level of skill.

That being said, I tried mapping again, but always forgot one thing or another, never finished a real map (most of my things end at 20 seconds), so I tried to think of a way to do it this time and my answer was to try a shorter song, one I like and that I found no ranked version of it. (There wasn't one last week).

I messed up, but I kinda like it, because of the pink glasses syndrome.

Can someone tell me where I did wrong in a way that I, as an autist, can understand what to improve, change, get rid of, add, etc?

I don't want to get it ranked, my skills are not good enough and I still need to learn more to even reach a mediocre level.

  1. What about the timing?
  2. Patterns?
  3. Speed?
  4. Spacing?
  5. Usage of the different objects?

It's still a WIP and I want to work on it for at least this week and after that gonna do a new song.

Thank you so much for reading this essay and hopefully helping me out here.

BPM seems to be 143 from what I worked out

For normal difficulty you should stick to 1/2 beat snap divisor, 1/4 like the one you used is typically used for stream patterns

If you mute the volume on effects in osu using the settings above, you may be able to hear a drum every white bar on the timeline.

Try to not place so many circles (like the one around 6 seconds in the normal difficulty) in a circular motion. It's not bad to use circular motions but you should utilise sliders more effectively following the vocals and percussion precisely, using the beat snap division on the timeline as guidance.

Don't use very short spinners for normal maps, new players playing this map wouldn't have time to react and spin properly. Try to reserve spinners for the end of a map.

Unfortunately I can't offer too much help now, its 1:24AM here so I've got to go sleep.

I'd suggest to watch some of Pishifat's videos on YouTube for mapping, they are great but also download and look at other maps and compare, maybe even try to copy some of the patterns but not like a whole section of someone else's map since that doesn't really look good on someone usually.

Thanks for that feedback. If you got any other information I could use, don't hesitate to write it down here.

I know of Phishifat, I actually watched a few videos while writing my thread. And I saw a few things he mentions in your post, so I guess he was right after all, hah!

Is there somewhere a collection of the most common patterns?

I'm going to watch a few more of his videos, especially about structure and timing, so thanks for your input.

If someone else wants to tell me anything I would be happy as well, maybe there are still a few untold truths, heh.

This has a list of many techniques/patterns:

https://osu.ppy.sh/help/wiki/Mapping_Techniques

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have any images which is kind of annoying :/

I'm going to link some fairly nice posts and videos to help on patterns that I thought were pretty good, but don't feel forced to read and watch all of it at once. Look at a few things then try it out on your map. Start from scratch on a fresh difficulty, it doesn't have to be an insane diff, it could just be another normal so that you can compare it with the old normal map.

Here are the other links:
https://osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/topics/465718 made by Kibbleru https://osu.ppy.sh/users/3193504 on why certain patterns look good. You can also read some of the other comments in that post from professional mappers such as Monstrata https://osu.ppy.sh/users/2706438.

The next link is an upload of Monstrata's stream where he shows a bunch of the mapping techniques he uses. I'd highly recommend this one as you can see what he does and how he does it, you may want to speed the video up a little because it's 2 hours long

The next one is theories on mapping made by https://osu.ppy.sh/users/2202163 . On his profile you'll find the links to all the theories or you can just go and go to his youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGeHQeP0X9myPt7bOCcEHfw

Thanks !

I changed timing at the normal difficulty and once I used the correct offset and bpm it was so much easier to map.

I changed to 1/2 divisor and for stacks and short streams I used now a 1/4 one. I got rid of the short spinners and used sliders and added a few more gaps.

It feels so much better now and really shows how much it helps to have the correct timing.

Is there something you actually liked? Something I should keep using? I don't have a mapping style yet so I'm going to experiment with a few styles.

So after lots of revisions and advice from others (TangoZMango, Axarious, Tomward, and a few more)

I finally got to a point I can say that I'm at least 60% done with my map. (In my eyes)

Apart from Hitsounds, which I still need to figure out how to do it correctly (Pishifat did explain it i his videos, so I probably just need to watch it again.) And a few adjustments with the patterns, I'm pretty happy with the current result.

It's still a WIP of course, but I actually learned a lot, even if it's a pretty simple song to map.
