Problem details:
osu! has been giving me issues recently. Every time I open up osu!, I'm unable to open up the beatmap editor section of the game without getting a black screen that I can't alt + tab out of. I can open up the main song select screen to play the game without issue however. Also, I can use the options button to get to the editor screen just fine from the song select screen without getting a black screen error, but this is kind of useless because whenever I exit whatever map I chose to edit, osu! goes right back to a black screen. The only "fix" that I've found so far is changing the game from being in fullscreen mode to not being in fullscreen mode. When I do this, I get a black screen yet again, but I can close out the game and reopen it and then it works just fine. This would theoretically be fine, but I find myself swapping between playing and mapping different maps very often and having to do this "fix" constantly would be so much of a hassle that it wouldn't be enjoyable to do either of the tasks anymore for me.

I should also note that whenever the screen does go black, osu! isn't crashing as well. I can still click on anything that's on the screen and I hear audio feedback as well as music playing. It's just that I can't see anything while I'm doing this.

osu! version: Stable 20191107.2 (latest)

I'm assuming you are using an NVIDIA graphics card? The only solution I know to this issue other than disabling full screen (and possibly compatibility mode?) is rolling back your graphics drivers to a version that is around 7 months old.

Maybe try posting here if you have a GitHub account: https://github.com/ppy/osu-stable-issues/issues/207

I use an EVGA graphics card with NVIDIA drivers so yeah I'd assume that would still cause the same issue. Any idea as to why this would now start happening out of the blue as opposed to never before with this graphics card? (it's an EVGA GeForce GTX 1080)

EDIT: My drivers must have updated recently with me being unaware. I haven't updated them in months (I thought) but I'm running the latest version of the driver.

AFAIK, the current workaround is to hit CTRL+ALT+DEL then ESC.
