The only modes the default skin is passable is Taiko and CTB. The other two are horrendous without modification.
I say "modification" because currently the skin I use for mania is just a skin.ini file in a folder. I made the columns a lot wider and changed some colors around, and it works for me. The default mania skin's columns are too damn small, and I can't see how anyone plays with it.

I don’t want to squint my already-small-asian eyes by playing the default skin. Agree that CTB and Taiko doesn’t look that bad (standard is meh I guess), but goddamn mania looks like crap

For you to ask this question means you have not played this game long enough
It's usually to maximize the playability of the game. as a standard player skins usually remove things such as "300s" or combo bursts, and make the elements more minimalistic for easier reading.

those 300 that pop up everytime you click make it really uncomfortable to play,and make reading harder too

This game is unplayable if theres not a seminaked anime girl on the screen for at least more than 5 seconds

I like play with custom skin. Default Skin are too bright, blue spinner annoying my eyes and popup 300 distracted me.
But i play with default hitsounds + map hitsounds enabled, never use skin hitsounds like clicky, ping-pong or whatever. Mostly skins have a very loud clicky hitsounds, i cant play with this ones (irritated me).

Ye, Taiko deafalt is a nightmare. CTB tho is fine imo.
