What's the purpose of Videos, Backgrounds, Storyboards?

Videos:
I'm here to play the game, not watch some random anime OP/ED with circles popping out everywhere. If I wanna watch anime OP/ED I would go to youtube.

Storyboards:
I know the mappers spend a lot of effort in making these, but same as video, whoever pays attention to them? And I can't disable them with a mod.

Backgrounds:
I need to focus 100% on where the notes appear, especially during hidden or high AR maps.

Oh, forgot to mention the default skin hit-burst, why doesn't peppy change them? They are making the game harder for new players who start with default skin. And the default skin is really ugly in my opinion. Why not peppy redesign the whole default skin like he did with Taiko?

The basis for any good game is the fact that it's based on a story. I'm sorry, but I'm one of those people that actually watch cutscenes in video games as opposed to skipping them. The concept of storyboards is the closest thing we can get to when it comes to this storytelling aspect.

Yes i'm dealing with this with my custom skin, and have them videos turned off at all times.

I know this thread will turn into a flamewar sooner or later and thus I won't give my opinion on the subject, but let me just react on something:

Stepmania/Jubeat/Reflec Beat/Taiko no Tatsujin/etc. don't have stories, yet they are good games :?

I like a lot of the creative choices. But I'd also like to enjoy osu! for the competitive base gameplay. I'd be willing to take a score hit through a mod if it meant playing clutter free. But the last big thread about this in feature requests was shot down/locked so it's not going to happen.

I suppose get used to it or quit. Because element removing won't be available next big update.

Honestly don't see what the problem is here. Storyboards, videos, and background are all considered during the ranking process, and if any of them detract from gameplay, the song doesn't get ranked.

Focus on the notes, not on the video [there is a no video mod if you insist], background and storyboards.
They have a purpose for why the creator of the map added them, not for a special viewing.
RBRat3
Well personally I want options.
Its nice to have eyecandy but when you can strip the OSU song directory from 12Gb to 5Gb just from deleting Png graphic elements and a hand full of videos also hitsounds is quite the chuck of data.

I wouldnt mind seeing an option for stripped beatmap downloads with song and notation data nothing more instead of having to do it myself.

For what purpose? Like i said, if i want to watch the videos, i rather watch them on youtube instead of watching it while playing osu! (which is the same thing as not watching it).

I know everyone is against discussing this because Peppy isn't planning to do anything about it, which is his right as the game creator, but I've got to say that rationally speaking there's no reason why it can't be made optional to remove all of these elements from gameplay for individual users in the game options. We already have the option to use custom skins to change the look and feel of the game. It only follows that the same principle of customization, which justifies custom skins would also justify customizing these other very related aspects of the game.

So far people seem to be advocating the merit of of these elements, and I think they are right in claiming merit for them, but as one poster said above, visual appeal is in the eye of the beholder, so merit in visual effects will carry different value for different players.

Some of you obviously didn't read the thread in Feature Request throughly, becuase it was peppy himself proposing a toggle working in a way that would have helped both parts to reach an agreement.
The thread was closed because some people kept whining and being unreasonable even with that alternative, so blame them for not getting anything instead of at least a partial solution, not peppy.
I won't throw my opinion about this matter again in this thread because i'm sure i would lose my temper and trigger a flame war.

Because punishing the majority of players based on a few whiners from early 2011 is clearly what should count for 2012.

Stop using this as an excuse. Have you got any idea just how narrow minded it sounds? And I don't even care about the details around this specific thread. It's just unfair to put old quarrels against us all.

Obviously the purpose is to strain, give you bloodshot eyes and epileptic seizures!

Seriously though I think it adds more difficulty to the game, especially intrusive storyboards. Another reason is that it's eye candy for newcomers which plays a role in attracting more users to the game. It also contributes to the overall "feel" of the map.

You need to think of the noobs too. Please, think of the noobs.

No comment, I'll just go with the flow on this one. I haven't deleted any sb's, videos or bg's yet, but that maybe because I'm not in the higher tiers of skill yet.
kriers
What annoys me with all of this, is that peppy and his gang of higher-ups keeps talking as if deleting a storyboard is out of the question - impossible, and that it's an act of crime. Really, you can't expect players NOT to make use of something that's potentially advantageous so long as it's undetectable and very easy to pull off.

I wouldn't mind if any of this wasn't customizable, because that would make it even in terms of competing for a top placing in any given map.
Sadly, older records that had this advantage will ruin the fun.

No new thread is going to gain the momentum as the last one did for the reasons why the last one was locked. He can do whatever he wants to do with his game.

*cough*Though I'm still interested in perhaps, maybe gandering, at a "ethical circumvention". * Vague request for what one might subjectively call a "cheat"*.*cough*

Game appeal aside, the main beef with backgrounds and storyboards and videos is AR10. Some Hatsune Miku maps with grey backgrounds and grey hit circles are also a problem.

Two days ago was the first time I deleted a BG and it was for an AR10 map. This is what people are actually moaning about. How many players play Hidden+HardRock at AR10 with a background or storyboard? I'd like to see a hands-view video if anybody has one. And no I'm not joking before you call me a retard, I'd really like to see it.

It's not that it's impossible. It's just so much easier to delete stuff and save yourself the hassle.

Yeah it's easier, but peppy seems to think that there's no difference in the hands of skilled players. That's why these topics get created, and shortly graveyarded. Edit: Well I might correct myself, he knows there's a problem, he just thinks it can be overcome with enough practise.
RBRat3
Im all for adding difficulty to maps with storyboards with a lock out in place to prevent removal/disablement. But if I had the option or the map maker thought it was an unnecessary addition and allowed it by choice I would download the map without the unneeded bloat that came with it.
natyusha
Since there is a no video option I decided to just delete all video files from my osu songs directory a long time ago. It saved me quite a large chunk of HD space too.

I don't really have much of a problem with storyboards but, I would like it if the skin I made was used on every map. I'd be pretty happy with consistently styled hit circles even if the background or storyboard is somewhat annoying.

Stupid question. To annoy the players, of course.
PROGUY
If you hate videos so much, then just delete them from their respective song folders (or disable videos in the Options). Same for SB and BG (you have to delete them manually for those two instead).

The next update is going to force you to have the complete beatmap, with all elements, in order to play. The only good thing about this is that it will prevent people from cheating flashlight through storyboard mods that tell people where the notes are going to be next. However flashlight is meaningless and one less way to cheat it ain't going to help. Flashlight is at it's best, tryhard memorization. At it's worst, dual-screener's cheat boost.

There's no sanctity in FL to protect. Meanwhile, confusion.

Did I miss anything? Why the next update suddenly?

I really hope that ppy is going to implement a BG and SB switch if osz2 is ever released.
In that matter I'm trusting him that he won't make the game worse for those people who prefer the actual rythm / clicking over watching other moving elements on the screen. So far I didn't see him worsen the game.
BUT. In the end all we can do is wait. ppy knows our opinion already. No need to start another flamewar.

the issue for me is night core loli bg's offend me.

Hello dear OP.
Save this as .bat
Place it in your song folder
Run the bat
SPOILER
echo off
title Background remover.
echo This is going to remove all .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .wmv and .wav files.
echo This batch should be placed in the song folder of osu!
echo Otherwise you're risking the lose of all the files with same extension.
echo This process can take up to few mins. It depends on how many songs you have.
echo Deleted files will be outputed into a .txt file.
pause
del *.jpg /S >jpg.txt
del *.jpeg /S >jpeg.txt
del *.png /S >png.txt
del *.wmv /S >wmv.txt
del *.wav /S >wav.txt
del *.osb /S >osb.txt
echo I'm done.
pause

Oh, if you're interested, here's an image with the size difference.

Or yea, the next format I meant. This "osz2". It was said editing the contents and then playing wouldn't be possible and would require you to re-download the map. Mods were suggesting not to remove anymore elements as that is the case.

I only edited one map. It had a heavy cartoonish skin and background. Very confusing. I cut everything but the necessary and pasted to another folder. Then pasted back. An inconvenience for sure. It's better to skip such maps than to delete the elements.

Edit:

i would advise otherwise.

I know that. ;)
What I mean was: Why the next Update? There already were plenty of updates since osz2 was announced and I see no reason why specificly the next one should include it.

Hmm, I don't know how you store your songs, but I have multiple copies of beatmap packs and a song folder with bgs, sbs, videos and a one without those things.
Wishy
They are there just to look nice and be removed once you learn you actually can do that and make the game more fun if all you want is to be a good player/get good scores.

I'm pretty sure osz2 never came out since peppy actually understands how big a chance/hit that would be for MANY of us, and he knows many players would just give the middle finger to this game and go play something else/play unranked maps. Even if he says he doesn't care, I think it must be hard for anyone to add some update to a game that YOU KNOW it won't really bring any new player in, but just players out and many flame wars/mad people everywhere. Like lol really all you gonna do is make a few mappers say "good job peppy!!!!!!!!!!!!", and LOTS of players will just say "you're a jerk this update sucks death to osz2".

The game has many flaws that have never been attended to begin with (for years) but that's another topic.

If you don't care about the details then why are you even replying to my post?
There was a lot of support from a lot of people (me included), then a bunch of users came whining because they are too "pro" and they want to use the black screen every time instead of trying to give at least some decent alternative (too bad "allow me to disable everything because i say so" is not really a valid alternative). Do you really think this is more open-minded and reasonable than what I'm saying?

Try thinking as if you were the game developer. Would you implement a feature you don't consider necessary, with a lot of people whining and insulting you destroying any kind of motivation? You wouldn't and i wouldn't blame you for it.
Even so, after months peppy decided to give it a try and thought of a possible solution and all he got was even more whining and complaining for reasons i still can't understand completely.

So i still stand on my position: there was a possibility of getting something done about this and some people blew it up, so complain to them if you really have to.
