can you change beatmaps background

Hello, I would like to know if it is permitted to change a beatmaps background.
I am asking since I have heard that if you change anything in a beatmap the map will be unranked.

You can't change a ranked beatmap's background, if you do you'll be prompted to update it to last ranked version.

actually you can

but the background name should be the same as the previous one
for instance the beatmap have BG1.jpg, your replacement should be named BG1.jpg too

if it has different name, it will alter the name on .osu file. specifically under "//Background and Video events". thus making it unranked.

Not really, you can just name your background as the map's BG's name (like BG,jpg for eg) and paste your bg into the map folder and replace the old one

Wouldn't osu! notice a change in the beatmaps folder and revert it?
