I made this up today wrote:

there are currently no rules regarding the end time of storyboards, making things like this: https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/796338/#osu/1672217
technically rankable even though a player will be just stuck looking at a black screen for 46 seconds due to the storyboard not properly disabling the particles when they were no longer in use and were offscreen (they're set to F,0,126739,,0 which is much much later than when the map and storyboard visually end which is at 79980 ms )



i'm not sure if this wording is the best it can be but yeaaahh i can't think of anything better atm

the same issue happened on https://osu.ppy.sh/s/792085
and a similar issue happened on https://osu.ppy.sh/s/591442 where there were commands lasting for like.. 10 hours after the end of the map, but in that case, since they were faded out, the storyboard did end in play properly, but it apparently caused other issues in relation to loading the storyboard, lag, etc...


a background lasting for a few seconds or so would be ok, but I'm not sure how to define just /how long/ is ok or in which cases it'd be acceptable.

Disagree wit hthe wording though, this has been done tastefully as an easteregg before in https://osu.ppy.sh/b/456752 and i think that's great

Can I propose the following wording:

There must be no active sprites or commands later than the ending of the mp3. Sprites and commands lasting for longer extend the time after a map ends needlessly.
There isn't ever be a reason to storyboard past where the mp3 stops, since theres no longer any sound or map to support the storyboard.

There should be a slight leniency on this like maybe a couple of secs or so. this would make it easier for the storyboarder without worrying too much about specific ms or so.

Also if you want the black screen or so to stay all the way to the end of the map, the easiest would be to make it end a tiny bit after the mp3 ends

There should be no active sprites and commands after the end of the song. A few seconds are usually fine, but you should not need to delay the end of the map by any longer than that.

that still doesn't quite work either and would be even more harsrh than mp3 wouldn't it? even if it's should instead of must, since songs can be a bit shorter than the mp3s

The intended end should generally be the end of the song/mp3, but may be later if the storyboard has an outro sequence.

i prefer oko's wording to this. the "should" in it means it's a guideline, so i dont think it would be any more harsh. if there's an outro sequence in the sb (which is unrealistic to define in a rule by exact time), it would be okay, whereas the black screen in the op would be stopped

the intended end of storyboard can be bullshit reasoned to be 10 hours after the song ends too

oh yeah right sometimes people would make up the weirdest reasonings i forgot :(

this has been applied in https://github.com/ppy/osu-wiki/pull/1651 and will be amended to the ranking criteria in about 5 days

if anyone has concerns about the change, now is the time to show them!
