Simply put, there are only two concrete rules, the rest is common sense.

Rule #1: Choose the song you think would appeal most to the musical taste of the user above you. #1, or #2.

Rule #2: Provide the next user with only two songs, one of which you like more, for them to guess.

With that, I'll start with these two:

1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHDEXxfRz24

2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0LP5telMWg

(Edit: You aren't required to reply to someone if to announce whether they're correct or not, but you can if you'd like, just make sure you address them or quote them.)

@Rook: Tough one. I don't really know, im not sure how you'd feel about the vocal style in #2, so I think I'll go with #1.

Pretty difficult. Though #1 seems to be much better produced, your current post gave off the vibe of shitpostery, thus suggesting you unironically liked #2. I'll choose #1 anyways, on the off-chance you're serious about your music taste.

Husa ya big doof 0 is not an option >:c

1 ?
Nope. My selection was pretty tough, I like them both almost the same, though the first one was the type of mood I liked, I liked it's concept more, and the vocals delivered an interesting narrative. The second one was also good and was something I could sleep to, it's calm and peaceful and ultimately was just satisfying.

But my favorite of them is #2, for the sake of a nice experience. 1 is cool, and is honestly really good, but i love the drunkly euphoric atmosphere of the second one.

Yah you're right, but I do like generic-ish rock/country vocals if they've got a Southern accent.

I'm thinking because of the mood you'd prefer 1?

Hmm. This initially felt a bit easier, but now... I'm not sure, but judging off of the instrumentation in #1, I'd enjoy something like this to an extent. It's pretty good, I think. But when I think of #2, it's a little similar to pretty much a lot of what you seem to listen to. I want to go off of #2, for the sake of my perception in the familiarity and consistency in your taste.

Rook wrote:

Close, it's #2 again. The mood isn't the end-all and be-all of my taste, and it's about 25% of what I judge songs by. I do like heavy, dissonant, gritty, dark moods, but there are specific ones that are also calming, like #2.

I like #1, and I'm certain you've seen me mention that song before, as one of my favorite songs in the drone genre. But I prefer #2, for the fact it's actually full of sound, and not just a droning set of notes. This song has nice pads and chords with an interesting rhythm and interesting percussion used in the rhythm. There's a bit more to it too, but explaining it is a bit of a challenge, so I'll leave it there.

No, I enjoy 1 a lot more, its fresh and way more rewarding to listen to. 2 I like, but I only ever play in the background.

Also really difficult in it's own way. Honestly #1 in comparison to the others just doesn't really seem that great. #2 is pretty nice, but HOLY FUCK THE REVERB IS KILLING ME. i think it's good, though it feels a little bit overdone, but i still enjoy #2. I don't really know about this, but perhaps #1 would be preferable?

im a not-so-sneaky boi

Yep, you're correct. again, I really like the both of them, but #1 is an obvious one. I guess it was a bit easy. It's just a lot fuller, while maintaining a whole atmosphere of general calm. #2 is great, and would be easy to sleep to but isn't as interesting and fulfilling as #1.

Correct! I do indeed like hyi, but I've typically found #1 to be somewhat preferable in comparison.

- - -

It just won't get easier aAAaaAAaa

Both of these songs honestly seem just as good as the other overall, in terms of personal taste. It's hard to guess when I keep thinking of what I would say about it, so I'll try not to let it cloud my judgment if i can. This feels a little too obvious with the music video of #1 as there's shots of birds, so I don't know what to go for in the case of mind games, it doesn't help that they both are good. I doubt the theme of birds would be the deciding factor here, but I can never really know.

Listening closely, it's amusing how 1:38 in #1 kinda counteracts the theme of #2.

But honestly I think I should just go ahead and make a conflicted guess. Is it not #1?

- - -

This is both difficult and easy, dependent on what you know of me considering my taste in momentum vs. mood...

Correct!! Tis the best Madonna song imo, I like Posty's 'Stay' more than 'Blame It On Me', but I call both artists my guilty pleasure picks and I like them both about the same amount.

Ow crap, I dunno. So I think maybe it's 1 again. I know you like the mood from Downtempo tunes, but you're always technical when it comes down to appreciating music for its instrumentation and stuff, which I think there'd be more to speak on in 1. That being said, the 2nd track is subtly quite intricate too, so I'm really unsure.
It's quite hard to think of this objectively, easy to let your own tastes cloud judgement.

Correct once again. I like them both almost equally, but the fact there's more to speak of makes it seem better, and honestly #1 is already known to be one of my all-time favorite breakcore tracks, so it's hard to top that. #2 is great, i love it, but not to the extent of #1.

Rook wrote:

Indeed. That's what makes this game fun, i guess!

- - -

Hmm. Hard to choose. Honestly, I'd believe #1 might be something you'd probably listen to in the background. In #2, the instrumentation isn't as present as #1. I'm not really sure what to choose, ad I might've even gotten the roles reversed in reality as far as "listening to them in the background" goes. I'd have to edit my thoughts on the comparison each time i listen to it.

...But I'll take my chances and guess you'd prefer #2.

"guess the song the user above prefers"

I'll excuse that for now and say you guessed I preferred #1. In the case it wasn't known, then this is to clarify. If it was known, then I misinterpreted it, which I would point to the phrasing of your response.

But treating that response as a guess, you'd be correct. #1 is the song I'd prefer.

- - -

Since I don't know much about you or your taste, this might be a bit difficult. I'll base it on objective qualities and assume from what I already know.

#2 seems rather similar to the songs i sent in the mood (cheery/uplifting), and has upbeat sounds (chiptune-link synth), so I assume you wouldn't really enjoy that. With that, I'll guess you'd like #1?

I felt like I needed to re-assess what my thoughts were on the songs, so I took the time to rate them myself. The results:

#1 - 8.77/10. Engaging, lots of different sounds, and manages to sound interesting with each sound and progression. Well organized, and well executed.

#2 - 9.03/10. Sounds beautiful. It seems to impact me a little, I feel a lot from this song for some reason. The vocal cuts are soothing, and their high pitch acts as what would lull me to sleep. Not exactly engaging in it's drive, yet still subtly powerful without that specific drive, likely due to the mellow soothing mood. It feels comforting. The instrumentation is entrancing. The progressions are amazing.

I'm not sure why, but #2 was the song that impacted me more. In fact, this was the song to be the oxymoron of its effect -- one of the only songs I've heard that made me feel somewhat emotional, and as a result, i actually felt somewhat suicidal when i first listened to it, as my situation was pretty rough around the time I found it. Due to a previous conclusion, luckily I didnt take those thoughts too seriously and thus, never intended to put suicidal thought to action. Because of how it emotionally impacted me, it feels more notable to me. It feels like it shouldn't, but it is. This was the song to really wake me up and notice things more, to see that I dont have a metaphorical obsidian wall blocking me from emotion, it's that the effects of what i perceive as emotions were diminished. It's what helped me realize I didn't have true apathy, at least, not to it's truest and extreme extent.

- - -

Whoah, This is hard to decide from. #1 is like what I'd call my #2 in terms of its mood, but your #2 has some amazing parts to it that involve some interesting ways to progress the song. #1 is consistent, #2 is interesting and the quality varies, as the middle stands out more than the beginning. Took me a bit to notice that #2 was from FELT. Nice.

I'll take my chances and guess #2. It's too interesting not to think about.

- - -

Sorry I didnt respond as quickly as I wouldve, my headphones broke so i cant judge the frequencies and moods as well as I normally would have. I'm taking more time to really try to understand the song. I dont really have much money at all, as I have no form of income and I'm not currently eligible for a work permit with my GPA, I'll have to work hard as a sophomore in highschool to bring it up so that maybe I can have a chance at something that'll at least bring me a check. Until then, my budget is going to be really low for headphones, but I do want some quality headphones, so it will have to be more than what I'm usually comfortable with. My absolute price limit is anything further than $45. That's hard to do, finding good headphones under that limited of a price range, as there are some good headphones that are only about 60 or 70 USD, but are just too much for me to handle long term. I wish to save up as much money as possible for when I'll really need it.

Moving on.

Oh I never woulda guessed, interesting to hear that song in particular affected you. What makes you think you're somewhat apathetic? Just out of curiosity. I don't want to assume to know you, but my impression is that you're a really creative person which actually shows a lack of apathy since art/music/whatever is predominantly driven by emotion.
Twas 2, 2 is just incredible in most every way imo, I like 1 a lot but It'd be absurd to say it was better than the FELT song.

Uh I think this is the hardest one so far. I really have no clue. I think they're both very similar, at least to my ears, and they both have much of the same mood. I think 1 is a little more sophisticated with it's approach, so for that, I'm just going to go with 1.

Had to re-evaluate this as well:

#1 - 7.61/10. It's good, a little cluttered but has some discernable rhythm pretty much the whole time. It sounds nice and the strings are great. The piano is great. Nice progressions.

#2 - 7.53/10. It starts out a little suddenly but the second part makes up for it with nice ambience. It's mostly that there isn't much that's interesting about aside from the really haunting mood and the ambient pads.

I guess you're right. It was a close call. It's #1.

Rook wrote:

...I guess I best identify myself with apathy from how I act IRL. In most situations, you'd notice I'm reclusive, but I'm not completely shut off from others. Best noticeable while I'm at school. A lot of the time I'd be feeling really tired, or I'd just intentionally stop caring altogether to get through the day, because had I not, I'd get myself in more than I'd want to handle. Emotions are an iffy thing, and could be what defines a particularly wonderful moment as well as it would in being the instigator to brash and impulsive actions. I tend to filter out emotions and stay away from them, and can manage to do that really well. I wound up realizing it wasn't a lack of empathy or emotion, it's that I never really allowed myself to feel much, and in turn, shielded my self from everything.

I'm having a hard time finding the words to explain this actually. I'd be better representing my previous apathy through sharing the events that happened in the past, but I'm not really too willing to write many more paragraphs.

- - -

I'm not sure what to go for. Each of them has their strengths. I'll guess #2? I dont even know about that, that one's a different style but lyrics are pretty well-made honestly. The first one you might actually like, but it's so passive I dont know what to think of it.

#1 - 8.32/10. Really nice, the vocals are soothing for the vocaloid used, nice progression, pretty decent drop, and a great atmosphere. The outro was interesting.

#2 - 8.48/10. Really nice, the vocalist sounds great. The tension put into the song is impressive. Each chorus is expressive and powerful, especially the last one. The progressions were great. The mood is a mixture of mild distress and melancholy and is simply addicting.

Welp, ultimately, you're correct! #2 seems to work best of the two. I really like the first but the second one is more impactful.

- - -

Pretty difficult to choose from. Both, yet again, have a lot to like. I actually might make a playlist for some of the songs I like from your submissions, because I'd actually like to try listening to this stuff casually sometime. It's really good.

Back on track, #1 is complex, quite an interesting and addictive mood with really intriguing rhythmic patterns and progressions. #2 is nice, easy to listen to, and has a much different atmosphere in contrast to #1, where it's much more open, wonderful, and sounds almost euphoric in a sense.

Hard to judge, but would #2 sound nice to you?

Imma guess... 1. AGain I really don't know, I'm thinking its probably close again. 2 seems very linear(?) in its approach, its constant and nice to listen to. 1 just seems more innovative, fun and chaotic. They're both really good for different reasons, though, I have a hunch it's 1.

I have to listen to both of my own songs multiple times to figure out which I like more at this point xD

While #1 is somewhat experimental, it's concept is mostly where it works best. It has a nice atmosphere set up, the Speedcore sections are well-done, but the only problem is the application of the splittercore kick in the Splittercore sections, the effects put on it make it sound "overcooked" in a sense, and instead of trying to sound chunky, it sounds squelchy more than anything. I REALLY LOVE the lead though, and it's saving the song from more of a critical review. Though, in a few parts, the squelchy sound does pay off and contributes to the atmosphere a bit better.

#2 is not as experimental aside from the instrumentation and atmosphere, as Speedcore/Splittercore is not usually clear and relies on the atmosphere to sound good. This one is both clear, and contributes to the atmosphere. The chords are great and set up a great mood. The chorus sounds really amazing though, and paired with the bright vocals, it's just more amazing and consistent. Here, though it's not necessarily standing out too much compared to #1, the consistency in quality makes it my favorite.

So ultimately, #2 was the better one. But yes, it was indeed really close. I appreciated the direction #1 went for, but the execution is what drew the line to what I preferred.

- - -

Whoah, first off, #1 is fucking insane (in a good way). Both lyrically and musically, but more so lyrically in the concepts presented, being the underlying tone and ultimately the interesting story of the song. Has a creepy/dark factor I'd enjoy for some reason. #2 is pretty cool story-wise.

Objectively, #2 doesn't have much going for it in comparison but is well-paced and does have good progressions. I don't know how you'd feel about the sound of the vocals in #2. Though #1 is probably repulsive to some, I'd imagine you'd like #1?

- - -

The second track is incredibly solid, literally 10/10 stuff at some parts for me, I adore it. But again I really can't decide. I think I'm gonna go with 2, for the fact that it just explores so many tones and sounds, 1 I can definitely see you preferring for it's energy though.

My thoughts exactly on both of them. Just when I thought I liked one, I listen to the other and I'm tied again, I'll have to review them myself to see what I think.

#1 - 9.09/10. A pretty interesting intro. I'm hooked as soon as I hear 2:03, a beautiful arrangement of synths, so airy and yet so smooth and full. The instrumentation of everything just works. From 4:30 to 5:00 onwards, leads to the best buildup of it, another area with nostalgia-inducing synths that make me feel like the kid I was back when i first heard what Trance was. Then the best part overall, 6:29 really just could be considered borderline eargasmic, as every sound there actually fits well and the energy from it's melody just sleeps into me. The falling action and resolution of the song from within the outro just makes me wonder how anyone could so smoothly move from one part to the other. After all that, I think I can conclude that this song is fucking ear-candy.

#2 - 9.16/10. A really interesting intro, it set up an immediately enticing atmosphere with some good tension. As soon as the vocals in 1:08 arise, i'm already feeling calm, and the song is... almost by force, lulling me to sleep. The orchestral progression from there is fucking amazing, and 2:17 is my hook, I'm just amazed at the creativity of this, the glitchy cuts of each instrument is just arranged so well. This song is generally really soothing, I appreciate that. Some parts really represent how hypnotically calm it is, and honestly, explanation isn't needed. Another orchestral part, at 4:32, where everything just blends into each other to make an epic buildup-- I just love how that sounds, everything feels so natural and raw, and that buildup, it keeps going, and going. Eventually, the big climax of it comes up at 5:57, and I'm just stunned. It went from Ambient, to Orchestral, and then to fucking Breakcore, the one genre i was not expecting from this, and it sounds absolutely lovely with everything put together. The smoothness and absolute flow of this section just keeps going, it flows into so many other amazing parts, until the falling action of 8:12 onwards, where it just ever-so-smoothly flows back into the abyss. The outro is great.

Wow. I cant stop thinking about the breakcore section of #2. It's too memorable. Indeed, my favorite of them is #2.

Both Taishi and Nhato are wonderful producers, so I guess I cant expect any less from them.

- - -

#1 is probably the best ambient stuff I've seen you send in a while... until that amazing fade-in at around the 5-minute mark. That part is amazing, everything onwards is great too.

#2 actually kinda hurts my ears and the sound quality isn't too great, might be the earbuds i'm borrowing, though. Despite that, I can tell where it's going and whoah, it's pretty damn full. Mmh, that bass, too.

But I dont know, I can only base it off of what I could hear best, so I'll guess #1.

Nope. #2 is alright, though. I actually prefer #1, it has depth, and an amazing atmosphere, the instrumentation is pretty good, and the progressions were well executed. It continues to be interesting and sounds nice as it goes on. Everything is balanced.

- - -

An interesting selection, I guess. Personally, I find #1 has some substantial depth. #2 seems alright. It's pretty good, actually but doesn't appeal to me as much as it could've, though it does sounds pretty good at times, some aspects take away from the experience. Most notably, the high-mid in some sections is a little "screechy". Hopefully that's just an effect by these cheap earbuds. A little unsure what to think knowing that this was a song from someone like Porter Robinson, typically his songs are more valuable than this in comparison. Trap, even as melodic as this, usually fails to do much aside from being mediocre, quite frankly. That doesn't mean it's bad or anything, just somewhat lackluster. I'll guess #1, then.

2 for the sole reason I'm trying to sniff out some more doom metal/drone music to get into atm.

Ah both of these are great, methinks it'd be1 , just seems like the more self fulfilled tune.

Yet again, another close one. I've actually really liked #1, but there are some musical concepts in #2 I preferred. I would say that I would've liked #2 more as a composition, but the sound of its screams at some parts slightly take away from my experience with the song.

I had to value that by overall usage of interesting concepts, and #2 was the one to come out on top with that. #1 is constant in a sense and I like that, just not enough that hooks me in, even though i do love the sound of #1.

- - -

oof

Okay, so #1 here is pretty decent as far as the guitarwork goes. The vocals are alright and somewhat blend in, so it doesn't detract from the song or anything. It does seem a bit mediocre for what it does, though.

Then there's #2, with some pretty good instrumentation, it sounds nice, even if there isn't much inherently interesting, it's a familiar and nice arrangement. The thing about this one is the way the vocals are sung, and personally, it didn't work out that well. I do appreciate that it help set up a nice melancholic mood, but it's... well, something I'd be conflicted listening to. I do like how it ends, with a nice piano outro.

On second thought, I think I can get used to the vocals, it was just a little off-putting for me initially is all.

A bit hard to gauge. I feel like I should know enough about your taste by now but then here I am struggling to see what you'd prefer ( >~<)

#2? I dont know how you'd feel on the vocals for that. #1? Well, I'm not sure whether or not it's interesting.

hOlY sHiT this is difficult

I'll go with #2 as a quick guess, but the vocals are oof.

Karg's stuff has decent vocals ;v ;, achropls. It's not his greatest song though, but I generally love his sound even if his work is not that impressive compared to other similar artists. 1 is my favourite, one of the best songs in the genre, good melody and good aggression and... did you just call Carcass generic? I slap you!

Both of these are really fresh sounding. I'm leaning toward 2, 1 has those delicious noises thrown in and sounds very serene, I just feel it's a little ordinary though compared with some other similar stuff I've seen you post around before. 2 sounds a lot more expressive, the sounds are, to me, more intriguing and it kept me hooked for the whole duration.

Correct! #2 is one of the songs that made me really love the ambient IDM tracks for what they were. #1 was pretty close, but wasn't as satisfying as #2.

- - -

Hmm. Well first off, #1 has quite the intro. I liked that.

But I'll go with #2. Saor is a familiar name, and besides, I think it'd sound more fulfilling .w.

owch ;w;

i meant that the way this is done just feels too familiar, like it was done too often or that i recall something sounding like this before ( ~> A<)~

One should be familiar .w.

Easily accessed thanks to my youtube playlist for the good music from here.

Both songs i've liked for a while now.

Easily 2 ye, I don't actually like the first one besides the intro also and a few small moments. I've yet to find a Saor song I dislike, they're all 7+ to me.

Oho cunning tricks mon ami. SO, my weakling brain is telling me 2, it's a pleasant, interesting song and it'd fits in with the stuff I know you like, but that'd be too simple...(?) I'm not that surprised you like 1, you've been open to the genres I've been posting since the start afterall, you've mentioned progression a lot and comparative to other sludge-y stuff, this definitely has more prog elements than most, especially toward the end. Plus I had a massive grin on my face when I saw it was that song, so I kinda just want to say 1 anyway .v . . Besides, unless you're pulling meta tricks on me, I think its too obvious to say 2 even though I personally like 2 more now you showed it me. But maybe thats cus its a fresh listen for me.

i steal idea, tyty

Correct again! Easy #1. I like #2, it is indeed the sorta stuff i like, but it is kinda empty and short, not too much about it to hook onto aside from the two main parts of the song, the drop, and everything that isn't the drop, both of which were pretty good. But #1, oof, #1 is easily one of my favorites you've sent ;w;

I dont intend to play tricks on you or anything (and I prefer not to be disingenuous, even if playing around is amusing), i just post two songs i enjoy and either make it easy or hard to decide between -w-

...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

well then. time to judge. im kinda excited #1 was one of the first ones i sent, so uhh... i want to just immediately say #1.

#2 seema alright, but i just dont have much to say about it, even though there are good parts in it ( >n<)

#1...? Shit I'm second-guessing myself. #2 seems good as an experience. I wanna say #2, but I'll say #1 because I'm a dUmB and I liked #1 .w.

this is kind of a close one, but it might also be too easy.

1 for sure, I'm obsessed with these vocals, they're just so appealing to me. Instrumentally I'd say its quite strong, but it's the vocals that really sell it to me.

Sooooooo
Personally I'm not into 1 that much, which kinda means I'm even more biased toward 2. That being said, as a whole experience, it definitely isn't unpleasant. In 12 minutes a lot does happen, like the whole section of 5:40 - 9:27 building up and changing very slightly, it never once had me bored...
But I love 2 so I have to think 2 ;v;

Triple kill! #1 is personally really enjoyable, mostly as an experience. I actually just fell asleep to it about 6 hours ago. But, I really do like #2, and it has more going for it in terms of content. I may prefer #1 for ambience, but in general, I'd prefer #2.

- - -

oof

#1 to me seems superior in ambience, mood, and content, quite honestly. As melancholic as it is, I kinda like it like that. Bittersweet stuff. Really easy to listen to, yet also full of what it needs to be what it is. In short, it's everything it needs to be.

#2 is pretty great to listen to in general, and I've always liked the song. I dont listen to it often, but when I do, I most certainly enjoy it. I just felt like #1 had taken the stage here.

Both of them are relatively even, 1 is more complete as a song, I guess, but for the piano alone I prefer 2. But you are correct, it's 1.

O
2 is fantastic, holy.
I don't think I've heard it before or if I have then idk what happened to my ears. 1 is still one of my favourite songs you've posted though. Um, I'd say you prefer 2, but I'd also think it could be close. They're both quite different, 2 tries to be more unique where 1 is very ''standard'' but the execution of both of them is top stuff.

just gonna hop into the game, even though this is going to be very difficult for me.
not sure but track two seems to bring out a stronger narrative comparatively, and the emphasis instrumentation wise in this track seem to be superior as well. so I'm gonna guess you enjoy 2 more.

I'd guess 2, the mood is quite industrial and heavy sounding which is something I believe you'd like. 1 is quite empty in comparison, and I'm dumb cus I really can't see much to enjoy in it.

Well that was a close one. I like both of them for differing reasons, I think you might be right by saying I'd enjoy #2 a bit more, as an experience.

Personally I liked the sort of atmosphere and mood #1 had, and the intro was pretty interesting to me when i first heard it. Though #1 didn't have much that was catchy like #2 did, the little experimental directions it goes it, along with the spooky mood and soft yet crunchy atmosphere and texture being presented with #1 would be why I'd like it.

#2 is indeed fairly industrial and is more grounded and earthy, yet metallic in texture. It has a pretty catchy theme to it. The breathy vocal in the back is pretty interesting in how it adds to the experience. It works pretty well in my opinion. The lyrics, though hard to discern at times, are pretty eerie.

I think there's plenty to like about both, but you'd be correct, that the first song is a little empty in comparison to the second.

- - -

Hmm. #1 has a style I'd typically associate with you when I listen to the music you submit, and it's familiar. But, I'm getting the feeling perhaps #2 would work out better for you? I think you might like both of them quite a bit, so it's a bit hard to choose.

Yep, it's 2. I like 1 but I think it's quite safe, 2 just suits my taste more at this moment.

2 again? 2 sounds a little more innovative where I think 1 has more charm, so idk. The chimes in 1 I personally really like, but 2 shifts and changes and keeps things fresh throughout the listen which I'd say is more your thang.

2. Not generally into indie, but I love how soothing it sounds.

1 is more intricate and has a great mood, great voice too. 2 has some sass and is a large degree more jazzy and upbeat. Probably wrong, but I'll guess 2.
