Megaupload were basing their entire business over piracy. Emails that were taken by the FBI clearly show that they know piracy was at the core of their business; they had even discussed providing cash rewards for uploading specific copyrighted content that they wanted on the site.
Obviously this is very very illegal and it's no surprise the government wanted the site taken down.
