(don't really go on this forum much, but tis' an exception)
I am interest in hosting a Beat Mapping tournament/contest/competition where every beat mapper can join
The Grand Prize is $300 in real life cash (my own money of course, so don't fret, Peppy ;) )
Anyone interest in joining? If I got enough approval, I will start posting the tournament rules and stuff?
What do you think?
NOTE: This is a BEAT-"MAPPING" Contest, not a "How-Good-You-Are-At-Playing-Osu!" Contest

Well, I am just a lurker really (has been lurking for years), but yeah, I guess this does seem a tad suspicious

Judging from his account history, with his amounts of total silenced, I don't think so...

Bass-chan wrote:

There won't be anything in it for me though if that was the case (since it have to be specific beatmaps that I request)

Well, anyway, the responses haven't seem so positive so far... I guess a lurker can't just suddenly jump out of the blue and declare something big suddenly, and expect people to take him seriously...
You can buy a PS Vita with $300, ya know...

The big prize will only serve to amplify the butthurt.
Maybe try opening a "beatmap commissioning" thread or something? There used to be a beatmap requests thread but no one mapped any of them.

Well, another reason for the contest is that the amount of beatmap approved has been pretty slow lately, so I thought a bit of reward will be able to get the mapping community heated up a bit more
Well, anyway, look like I will give up on this intention if the number of total participants won't reach the number of at least 7 by the 12th of December

Then put your name down if you want to win this

I got silenced because of all the swag. Its too much for the butthurt peppy to handle.

Really? None of you are going to point this part out?
Lilac
Well, I was going to arrange the Beatmapping collab contest with LH.

Maybe it can be a 3-mapper contest with each person getting 100 dollars? Just a suggestion.
Mara
Sorry, I need to do it.

Start with the competition's structure and rules before announcing a prize. This is totally backwards.
ampzz
The only path I can foresee with this is multiple accounts popping up just to break the normal voting patterns (as I have seen happen in the past communities I have been part of) or purely, biased favouritism towards particular users appear without taking into account the map itself.
IE. Those that see [username] would vote for them regardless of how uncreative it is made.

I love my phone trying to Americanise my spelling or change it to words I do not want.

Don't worry, I am keeping track of people who has shown interest so far (which seems to be only you, and another"seems legit" guy who mentioned something about his swag)

Peppy wrote:

Also, about time you show up Peppy
I didn't post the rule fist because I was still waiting to see if people would be into the idea of having a contest.
If I were to type up all the rule, and no one join, it would be quite... disheartening
Oh well, here is a brief summary of the rule
-I will provide two mp.3 file of two different songs
-Participant can choose to make a beatmap out of one of those two songs (they can also do both songs)
-I will judge the beat map that made it into the Ranked beatmap only (which means beatmaps that don't make it into the ranked category, won't be judged)
-I will pick the beatmap that I like the most for each song, and gives out a reward of $100 dollar for the person who win for that specific song
-But if that participant also win in the other song, I will give that participant $300 dollars (grand prize)
so in the end, the result could either be:

Vanilla Prize Scenario:
Beatmapper D win the first songs, but not the second, get $100
Beat Mapper P win the second songs, but not the first, also get $100
or
Grand Prize Scenario:
BeatMapper K made the best beatmap for both songs, and win $300 (The grand prize I stated)

The reward would be sent through online transaction for security reason
If the winner doesn't have any form of online money keeping method, I will ship out a prize of their choosing that is roughly equal to the money the won (like, a PS Vita, etc for certain) to their given address

So, yeah, that's about the rough summary of the rule

I don't think it's public voting, but if it is, just number the maps and keep the mappers secret.

Well, I just stated my method of judging in one of the latest post
If that method is not agreed upon, I would still have another method up my sleeve

That's pretty much not going to work. Even in the best-case scenario, the result is a bunch of ranked maps of the same song, which isn't of much benefit to the community. A more likely result is that few or no people get their maps ranked in time for the deadline, and/or the mappers get bored and angry, and/or the modding community gets sick of modding different maps of the same song, etc. Ranking should really be the end goal for the winning map, not a prerequisite for entry...
boat
tl;dr for why this idea wont work = bias

Lol I'm not completely interested but I would like 300$ very much.
I just hope you send it in 1$ bills.

My thoughts exactly.

Anyway, this contest is rather flimsy at best.

It basically seems to be, "Map what I like how I like it." where a "Good" beatmap is entirely subjective to one individual. Which is actually fair enough since that individual is the one using their personal money for the contest but there are too many openings for structural problems, drama from the results, etc.

Fix'd.

That is a pretty much blunt way to tell it, but that's what I think of the way you think of your thing.
ziin
we'll be waiting 6 months for all the entries to get ranked and by then everyone will have forgotten about the contest.

hsbinh1412
You guys do have a good point
Okay, so these maps won't need to be ranked then
While bias isn't really an issue (since I know no one in this forum), and voting would certainly leave more chance for bias (double account), I would be all ears for a better suggestion

@SHellghost
No, it will be in USD (AUD value is higher anyway)

@ziin
there will be a deadline of course

...but okay, let's try and change things around a bit
The first map that got ranked and get a score of 9.5 will be the winner for that song
GladiOol
Haha 9.5 score.

OK FRIENDS, LET'S TROLL VOTE THIS SO IT WON'T WIN.

I'd join it if you didn't choose maps by ratings. Sucks to not like mapping anime/touhou/eroge songs, you know.

i vote any map i play 10, doesnt mean they are actually good :P
Backfire
Ok
Just give me 300$
The contest is now finished, Backfire wins!

Buy me something with that money Backfire and I'll vote for you.
Backfire
I promise to buy you dungeon defenders.
Vext_old
What a bro.
Sakura
Well i can see 2 things going on here:
"Low ammount of maps getting ranked" <- hardly mappers' fault, BATs have been busy/etc, there's anither thread discussing this in General Development
"Must be ranked / Rely on ratings" <- just no, get at least 2-3 more judges so that judgement isnt biased, as LH said, if anything the winning map should get ranked, rather than requiring to be ranked, and user rating is biased already as is.
jjrocks
You, my good friend, need some consulting and a well thought out plan before you start this thing again. Wait a couple months, gain some friends (especially those in the mapping community), and gain some popularity. Then talk with those friends about the idea and they should be able to point out the flaws in some of your contests . Then after ALL that you might be able to get somewhere....maybe. I'm not saying a beatmapping contest is a bad idea, it just might be too early for someone like you, who is just starting on their osu career, to start one.

- The amount of beatmaps being approved is low
- Let's throw more beatmaps into the mix
- Adding more work will speed things up

Regarding evaluation, you'd have to do it manually, either by yourself or a team whose opinions you sincerely trust. Automated metrics are derived from the community as a whole, and nothing in that respect is even remotely reliable.
