More specifically, what if beatmappers could choose what difficulties they want to make for the song?

what. We need easy difficulties. Also if the drain time is above 5 minutes of a song they can do only one difficulty, no matter how many stars.

Of course. Not necessary doesn't mean not allowed, and I'm pretty sure beatmappers aren't sadists.

That's just because the beatmap is old - nobody gave a shit that time.

Playerbase would decrease significantely since Normals are the 2nd most played difficulty class. Same would occur for Easy but since Normal difficulty exists they can replace them for the most time, they are also optional so they are already not necessary in that way.

Different time, different rules. Approval section were pretty inconsistent and left for laziasses more room to push exceptional difficult maps into approval.
