See the big frame behind the gameplay (It makes the play area smaller I think) ? How do I make it ?
When you open up the skin folder you will see a scorebar-bg.png and a scorebar-bg@2x.png.
The background you are currently using and the "box" in it, roughly shows the osu! play area.
If you want to create one by yourself use references from other skins! EG: Xilver, Seoulless ect.
