Beat the Lost Levels first (Virtual Console, not the cheap remakes), and the first SMB will have less frustration.

I beat the original once, but it was on PC using quicksaves.

To be honest though, I find almost all games from the third generation, including SMB1, pretty boring. Sure, they were good back then, but they're just too simple and repetitive when compared to modern video games. The fourth generation is where things really take off. And don't throw the you're-a-graphics-whore crap on me, I "grew up" playing Game Boy Color games in 1x on a computer monitor without sound.

but no idea now... but its just a time waster anyway. when i have nothing to do, i don't play. when i have heaps to do, i play mario/pokemonz/zeldamon/etc.
