I think that by adding the ability to automatically renew subscriptions would make them more inviting, instead of buying subscription for a specified amount of time. This could be done on checkout by a tickbox that asks - "Would you like your subscription to automatically renew?" that is by default unticked.

The thing is that support gets cheaper the longer you purchase it for, so having a renewable subscription would cost you more. You will also notice when your supporter tag runs out if you are actually using the features, so you won't forget to renew even if you purchase for a long period of time
