It is kind of hard to explain everything about mapping as there are too many different subjects on it to cover. If you have read all of the FAQ that was linked above and have some more specific issues that you are not sure of then we can try and help you.
(I also suggest going into #modhelp in-game and asking about some things as most people there will be able to give you some answers)
