The game will not allow me to upload my own beatmap because I've taken someone else's map and changed the entire thing. I'm only using the music because I couldn't drop a file into the game, everything else was changed even the background. How would I get around this?

I'm not sure if this is the place to ask this.
And this is only a guess, but most likely the file still thinks it belongs to another person and not you.
To get around this you'd probably need to get the mp3 of the song, go to editing, and drag the mp3 in osu. This will start a new beatmap that'll be your. Copy & paste what you've done into that new beatmap and it should work.

Usually this kind of beatmap related questions are asked in the General questions forum while this forum is only for different kinds of beatmap projects (Topics involved around GDing, Collabing, Albums ect.)
Though this issue is quite common and it usually can be fixed with this method
