Why very hard maps are approved and not ranked?

This isn't a complain or anything like it, it's just a question I've had since I started playing this.

As far as I've seen some very hard maps (or maps without easy/normal diffs) get approved and not ranked because "they are too hard" or "only for experts". My question is, basically, why very hard maps get approved and not ranked even when they have easier diffs so everyone can play them?

I may be wrong and what I'm asking doesn't make any sense since a map's diff has nothing to do with it getting approved or ranked but, as far as I've seen whenever a super insane appears everyone starts going like "it should be approved and not ranked".

Being for approval has nothing to do with difficulty but with length/max score

This is a very emotional issue
Rank is a complex process,why has "Rank"/"Unrank"?
Note corresponding the rhythm just enough to rank the map?
of course NO,This issue also involves the layout.
What kind of layout is good? I think it need "playable",not"fcable"
I think it need more user-friendly,Not to challenge the limits.
If there is only one player can nonefc, other players will feel happy in this map?
map make people not happy,it has necessary to rank?
Of course, if the layout was good enough,They can be classified into another category,"Approved"
Merely provides a ranking of single map.This is the approved another sense..........

maybe is a logical problem,why Approver not rank? But it is consistent with Rank of the condition?

One of the approved maps give up to 320 million score. If that is ranked, the score tables would be messed up greatly..

It really depends. If an absurdly hard map has more than 15-20m score, the choice is obvious, but if they have less (i.e. rainbow tylenol) the choice is less obvious.


It's really up to the ranking bats and the mapper to deem "what is rankable vs approvable" if the map technically fits all ranking requirements. Sometimes there's just much less drama to approving a stupid hard map than ranking it and dealing with the flak. I for one wouldn't like to see a map that's only fcable by three people on the ranking charts since everyone else is missing out on that score, or what-have-you.


tl;dr your question is valid but also silly and the answer should be clear if you think about it hard enough

If approval maps were well structured, readable and actually fit the song I'd be all for ranking them, but they aren't and I'm not.

Maps gets approved because it doesn't "completely" meets the ranking criteria, such as max score, having a difficulties spread for all abilities range, etc etc etc.

Max score meets ranking criteria, it has and easy, normal, and hard. And yet it is approved because the way you play it, does not exactly meets the ranking criteria

iirc max allowable rankable score is 20m

The ranking system is just bullsh*t anyway, almost anyone can get into top 50 at least without even be "good". (Farm ftw) And for high score maps I see no reason for them not beeing ranked since not everyone can get advantage of xxxmil scores from fcen it (Dragonforce maps ftw). (Except for marathon maps)
