Hi,

So I've noticed that multiple times, however tooday I decided to take a screenshoot and sent it for discutions. Look at this :

As you can see, the end of this slider is slightly off screen, and that is on a very popular ranked map, nothing else than Our Stolen Theory - United (L.A.O.S Remix).

I thought objets off screen, even so slightly was Unrankable, so how does this got passed the ranking process ?
Actualy I may know why : I think the ranking rules are having an issue.
In this thread (t/495246) we can read this as a rule :
Objects must never be off-screen in 4:3 aspect ratios. Objects that are even partially off-screen can create reading difficulties. Test play your map to confirm this.
This seams right, isn't it ? But it is not. 4:3 can be these resolutions : 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x960.
But most screens sold as 4:3 nowadays are actualy 1280x1024 resolution, which is NOT 4:3 but 5:4 aspect ratio.
Due to the fact it has more hieght than 4:3, the notes that fits at the border of the side of the screen in 4:3 will be slightly off screen in 5:4.
In 4:3 this slider is definitly not off screen

(Put the game in 800x600 Windowed to take this screenshoot)

5:4 (1280x1024 resolution) is a popular ratio as it is what the most "recent" non 16:9 / 16:10 screens are. As of tooday, it is still possible to buy 5:4 1280x1024 screens brand new.
So what I think is the maps should be adapted so there is no offscreen objects in both 4:3 AND 5:4 (1280x1024 resolution), as 5:4 is probably as used as 4:3 (if not even more). Of corse already ranked maps cannot be changed, but it could prevent new maps with this issue to get ranked nowadays.

Toughts ?

I think is only like that if you have your window resolution super low.

Not many people use 1280x1024 anymore, Most use 1920x1080 or 1366x728/1360x720 so it doesnt affect most of the community

Not many people use 1024x768 or lower (4:3 resolutions) as well but the rules still says notes must not be off screen on 4:3. If they must not be off screen in 4:3 why can they be off screen in 5:4 while it is still something used as well (Even if by a low ammont of people) ?

5:4 is non-standard non-gaming screen, it is pure office type.
Making rule about 5:4 is pointless, barely anyone use it for gaming (compatibility problem with MANY games). Same as producers doesn't care about making games compatible for 5:4. Higher height helps in spreadsheets, documents and even office specialistic software tend to require strictly 5:4 screen to work properly.
For gaming people buy 4:3 / 16:9 / 16:10 or even 21:9 (called Ultra Wide).

So you're assuming that every osu player has gaming stuff ? That's not a really good way to see the problem :^)

No. Use a 4:3 or a fatter aspect ratio (black bars on your screen) or get peppy to make osu! detect slim aspect ratios and scale the play area accordingly (same play area as if you were using a 4:3 res with black bars on your monitor)

The problem is not with maps/ranking criteria, it's with the game and how it deals with the res you are using.

You could just use a 4:3 resolution with letterboxing.
Ranking criteria is just how it is in that area. It's even worse on 1:1 resolutions because that's where youre going to get the full overlap of playfield+UI. Nonetheless, the center of each hitcircle/sliderend and the center of each sliderpath will be visible on the playfield in every case. That is good enough if you ask me.
