hard/extreme modes???

I'm new to osu, I just downloaded it yesterday.
I've been playing with my best friend and we've been having lost of fun until I started downloading beatmaps, then I only had hard and extreme showing up and I couldn't play anything else on solo or put the normal modes on multiplayer. I'm extremely confused, hope I don't look dumb to anyone here. Just need some help.

If that's not the problem, it may just be that the songs you have don't have difficulties that are the right level for you. In that case, I would go onto the beatmap page and click the option under the search bar that says "Recommended Difficulties". That should give you a good range of songs that are the right level for you to play. Have fun!
