To the topic, just stick with what is comfortable. Because you are new, you should try a couple things out to see which is your favorit. Unfortunately, I don't play mania, so I can't give you a great recommendation. I would just recommend to see where your hands land naturaly on the keyboard and then change the keybindings so you can play in that position

No worries, a mod moved it here! Make sure the read the rules at the top of every forum so you know what to and not to post!

As for the mania set up I use everything default expect for my skin, I use a private skin but ecafree2's o2jam skin is one I recommend using.
If you want to try and get better at osu!mania you can look at Drace's "How to improve in osu!mania" guide, it is in-depth and has a lot of content that will help you out!
There isn't a bad mania setup, everyone has their different preference and different playstyle, you just need to find what is comfortable and more enjoyable for you! Lots of people play wrist up/wrist down, some play 7k with their pinkie and not their thumb, also some people read upscroll instead of down. I don't see any use in reading up scroll unless you want to play Stepmania but if you find it easier to read go for it!
