Like many people that play this game a lot, I have set the resolution of my game client to something like 1600x900 or 1366x768 to allow myself to see more notes in my peripheral vision, even though I have a 2560x1440 monitor. This is fine, and I don't really have an issue with it, but it feels like there is a lot of wasted space around the edges of my client.

As far as I've seen, the osu! play area renders in a square(ish) shape which is relative to your resolution; I assume its 4:3. My idea is adding an option to the client to manually set the size of the play area to something smaller than your current resolution. Especially with the lovely new designs I've seen on the osu!next blog, having these elements undersized really takes away from their value, as the menus in the game already look really good at a high resolution.

UPDATED: I have created a proof of concept to display what I am suggesting: video available here/images here. Hopefully this is enough to show my suggestion. I think it would be a nice addition to be able to browse songs at a higher resolution but still have the benefit of a smaller play area.

I can see this might be an issue for tablet users though. I have my tablet set to a 1600x900 area in the center of my screen, but this wouldn't work in the menus. Perhaps there's a way to make the "raw input" option for tablets differ when in game?

Apologies if this has been suggested before, I couldn't find it but I might not have searched for the right terms.

Thanks!

Is so, you will have to set the letterboxing resolution.

1) Make sure osu! is in your native resolution and close it.

2) Go to your osu folder and find a file called osu!.Gallopokoi.cfg

3) Find the width and height setting. Make sure it is set to your screen's resolution. Mine is 1600x900, and your's should be 2560x1440 if that's your screen's resolution

4) Find the HeightFullscreen and WidthFullscreen setting. Set that to the size you want the game's rendering area to be.

5) Find the Letterboxing setting. Make sure it is equal to 1

6) Find the LetterboxPositionX and LetterboxPositionY settings. These allow you to move the game's rendering area.

7) Save

8) Open osu! and see if it works. Close osu! if you need to adjust something

Note: Changing the resolution or letterboxing ingame may cause the setting to reset, so I suggest doing it in the config file instead unless you want to reset it.

if i understood correctly he is already using letterboxing, but what he wants is something different: a letterboxed playfield but everything else (menus, interface, overlays, ect) fullscreen. It's not possible atm (as far as i know at least) and although this doesn't matter to me i do think this is a very good feature request since alot of people seem to play letterboxed or windowed for that reason.

btw abraker there's no need to edit the config file, you can just check letterboxing in the options (right below fullscreen)

I didn't catch that since it's unclear. Waiting for OP to clarify.

I have issues with the settings applying otherwise for some reason.

Hi, sorry, had exams.

I am already using letterboxing. I'm going to try and quickly whip up a concept video to better explain what I'm talking about.

Edit: Bluescreened 3 times trying to render this... bloody vegas. It's in progress, promise.

Edit 2: Okay, video uploaded: available here. There's a bit of an annoying ghosting effect that appeared after I rendered it, but I think between this video and the album below there is more than enough to give an idea of what I'm suggesting.

I also made an image comparison: available here.

I will add all this to the original post.

I don't think there would be a viable method to move the UI elements out of the render area for osu!.
