I download an osk file, make a folder named whatever the osk file is, put osk file in the folder, launch osu, click the skin, and nothing changes. Why is this happening?

You just click the .osk to install the skin.

What rys said. Because .osk files are already the skin, everything is in it.

heres some skin stuffs:

extract it if necessary
copy the folder then paste it to the osu!'s skin folder. (locate ur osu! folder first)
then open osu! for the skin to install.

another option is what rys said. which is easier

Older *.osk skins (from 3 years ago or more from the skinning thread) usually contains a folder containing the skin elements instead of directly showing you the skin elements contained there when You open the *.osk with File Archiver like WinRAR or 7-Zip.

If you load the osk by double-clicking it or move the *.osk to the skin folder, It will load the folder but the folder containing the skin elements is messed up (example: "osu!\skins\osu! Default\osu! Default").
You have to move the skin elements manually from inside that duplicate folder to the previous path/original folder (from "osu!\skins\osu! Default\osu! Default" to "osu!\skins\osu! Default").
