This isn't very useful in client but sometimes when I am in IRC, I would like to PM some friends and the only way i am able to see if they are online is if they are in any channels. If they close all channels i have no way of knowing if they are online or not. I think it would be helpful to have a simple command that shows your online friends.

I may not use this feature but I find this useful.

You can always use the query command to send them a PM. If they are not online you will see a message like "This username doesnt exist" or something similar

Having to type in each username is a bit much

That is quite not a proper way to check.
Better to have this command.

Then again, you can start by typing first letters from their name, and then click tab. This will autocomplete or give a list with users that start with those letters. A good alternative? I'm really neutral on this. I've never seen it be a problem.

This is something i thought of doing but the way it displays names isn't alphabetical leading to having to type out almost complete names, again if you have a larger friends list and like talking to more than a few people than it would be a hassle to type every single name.

That's useful in fact, me as an user of both IRC and In-game messaging, that's hard to find my friends, they have different channels (IRC).

Im not too sure if this is possible with the osu! IRC-server (it really should be) but generally speaking I would think that you could just put all your friends in a list and once you join the server you send a /whois request for each of your friends to the server.
If someone is offline it will just reply with "No such nick" and if they're online it will tell you in which channels they are and what their idle time is.
This obviously doesn't tell you when someone comes online but it can easily give you an overview of who is online.
You can also try using /names (probably too dumb to filter) or /ison <nicknamelist> (that's probably the best in case it works)
Like really, just dive into IRC-commands and client-utilities a bit, there should be some options that work without peppy having to do anything.
