Ok so I made a skin and I am trying to replace cursor trail and cursor smoke, but neither will change and I don't even have any in the first place.

Did you make sure to name your files cursortrail.png and cursor-smoke.png? You can also reload skin assets by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S to see if things instantly work. If you have other questions, you should make a post in the skinning support thread as opposed to making a new thread too.
