Hello. You guys probably aren't familiar with me, but I'm just here to ask some info that you guys might know... I got curious with how and where people get KSSNs.

I once had a talk with a Brazilian in #korean. He was seeking for an account to play Grand Chase in Korean server. Ofcourse, I told him none of us would give our account to a total stranger. He stayed in #korean for awhile after the conversation we had and left.

Few days later, the same guy visited #korean to ask what was 게임/이벤트소식 이메일 수신 동의 (agreement to receiving email). Yup, he was creating an account and hey, this meant that he already went through most of it including the KSSN section. How? In he's case, he got a list of KSSN and names who it belonged to.

This is scary. Really scary for Koreans. This means that there is a list of our identities on the website with an easy access to it. I'm not even sure of myself if they are only using those lists to play some online games. Probably not.

EDIT: some people told me that by knowing other's KSSN and their name wouldn't do any harm. Funny. I can go grab a dough from other's bank account if I knew his/her KSSN and his/her name

I don't even know what KSSNs are but just from Googling it, the 6th result was "Online KSSN Generator".

:P

I'm just rolling a guess here, not even going to look it up, but I bet it's Korean Social Security Numbers or something of that nature.
Social Security Numbers are one of the most personal numbers in the USA and are often used to identify yourself. If somebody has acess to your SSN they can deal some serious damage to you via identity theft or other means.
Because of this Social Security Numbers are always a high-priority target to get from people. And there are lists for USA numbers too. Hackers pull them and publish them. They just do that like with any other form of personal information.

If you protect yourself well I doubt there's much for you to worry about, OP. Just because he found a Korean's SSN doesn't mean every Korean's is there. I'd just keep an eye on what's done under your name and forget about it otherwise.

As to how and where you get them; I'm afraid you're on your own there. I bet there would be some deep-doo-doo (trouble) type deals if somebody posted that information here. Sometimes people post password lists and crap to public places like the Pirate Bay, but I'm sure you'd have to look harder for Social Security numbers.

I remember there were leaked lists some time ago, having quite a sheer amount of KSSN/Name pairs

Those generators also work sometimes (considering most of numbers in KSSN contain quite obvious info).

There was a way to find those using search machines, but that was banned for quite a long time by now.

And I guess something else I don't know about.

Most of this info I got from reading european forums discussing playing korean games and I was really desperate to get a EZ2ON account once (oh that was pretty long ago, heh), so I did some searches, but I managed to get a shared account after that.

Edit: I doubt you really should fear this, people who search for this are just gamers and even if they grab a KSSN/Name pair, korean names look like random hieroglyphs for europeans/americans (well, most of) and people don't even know what to do with these apart from registering an account in a game.

After some googling i found out how you could find KSSN's using the korean google page.

There are some files you can download that contain over 5k KSSN's aswell.

There is also a KSSN generator

lol, i like this warning

SPOILER
WARNING: Do not use these ID numbers for illegal purposes. Otherwise, all will be at your own risk!!!

*sigh* I'm just worried with the fact that it is that easy to search up people's SSN and their name with it
Gabi
Most people that are looking for a KSSN usually only want them to be able to play the games.

Anyways, i'm not sure how the identity theft works, but wouldn't they need more than you're KSSN and name to get something of you? like maybe your bank/credit card number?

Ah, there is other ways to figure those out. So ya, it's possible

No your real kssn's aren't in there. Those are generators that generate random kssn's , nothing to worry about. I used one once.
but in how are they generated... they need some process to be given one after all...

Its called doxing and seems its realitivlity (No idea if I spelt that right) easy to find these kssns. But I would highly doubt they can just simply take money from you account by knowing your name and this. If it is the case you should put a password on your bank account so if a withdrawal is attempted and they dont know the password they cant get the money.

Obviously I'm not talking in a way of "[insert KSSN] & [insert your name] to access your bank accout". There is a way a figuring out the password once you know those two info. It's scary

Anyway, I figured it is really easy to access other people's KSSN and their name by just googleling...

Are you referring to brute forcing like the banks website? If this happens the bank should block your account and phone you and ask whats up. At least thats how it is here in the us

I'm scared of the fact of it's self. Ofcourse you will get your notification of even canceling your notification option. Oh well it's just not pleasant to know that my our very private identity could be revealed that easily...

Hell even with just your email I can pull up your house address phone numbers net value of your home lot etc. I did it to dkun already.

Brute Forcing can involve trying crap found on other sites that have been brute forced and then trying them inside of the Bank Account, which can get the bad guys in.
The easy way to deter that is just to simply not use the password you use on the bank account for anything else.

Actually, in some places you might be able to withdraw money from a bank, only knowing the SSN and name.

I know I used to do it a lot, using my own bank account without any other form of ID, but that's another story about me often throwing my wallet including stuff that's inside it away. Though I suppose that may just be a bad case of security, but the possibility is there.

What in the world are you on about. You use a Master list when brute forcing that trys everything under the sun lol.

You need a KSSN to play in Korean MMO betas.
It's usually way too much hassle, so people just buy activated game accounts from Koreans. A few games, such as Grand Chase, don't require a legitimate KSSN, so online generators can be used to fake them.
Of course, it is dangerous as fuck. Blame the government for forcing this shit on game publishers, and blame game publishers for not running simultaneous worldwide betas.
Linking your online alias to your real identity is bullshit and should not be required for anything.

this isnt doxing it is someone having figured out the kssn generation seed and made generators publicly available

i sincerely doubt many if any at all of any kssn found in online publicly available lists actually belong to anybody

KSSN lists consist of real adult KSSNs.

Try making an under-14 account for, say, Digimon Masters Online. You can generate the child's KSSN, yes. However, that doesn't work for the parent KSSNs. You need a real KSSN for those because they check with the list of real KSSN for the parents. People have tried generating for those; it doesn't work.

As Pokebis said, there are SSN lists of all kinds on the internet. People fall for scams and hackers put those stolen SSNs, along with the other info, on the internet.

There's nothing to be afraid of if you're careful, though.

Blame your government or whatever it is that makes korean websites require kssn's. All it does is make foreigners steal them.
