[Rule Clarification] Song Content Acceptability (NSFW 2.0)

So this song got nuked for its content. While I am neutral on the issue personally, it does bring up the question of how content should be analyzed and what maps can be DQed for.

So the first issue is that there's technically no rule stating that the content of a song has to be acceptable. This is why maps like https://osu.ppy.sh/s/102666 got ranked way back when with no issues. Here is that rule

There must not be any obscene imagery in the background/storyboard/video content. This includes nudity, near-nudity, sexual references, violence, drug abuse, etc. Keep things PG, suitable for ages 12+.
And I know that the staff for some reason are really sort of against making a comprehensive list of things (I guess a lack of ambiguity makes it harder to bend the rules??) so this could be approached with a more general standing instead

This could be rewritten and moved to a guideline to be something more like

There must not be any obscene content in the map, although profanity is allowed. Any map using profane language must be tagged with "18+" on the map's thread. Obscene content includes nudity, near-nudity, sexual references, violence, drug abuse, etc. Keep things PG, suitable for ages 12+.
Here's potential problems:

1) There's still no real guideline about what is "osu!safe" for the game. Does anything past a C-cup still get maps deleted? Can I still get things like this ranked? I'd love to revive the "NSFW Imagery" discussion since that was an attempt to get some actual guidelines going that people can reference, but it was moved because "oh ranking criteria will take care of that yea sure :^)."

2) Do we even allow profanity? I've left it in there since a LOT of maps are ranked like that, but still, is it something we want to stop using?

3) I wanted to add a clause saying that the QAT will discuss issues on this case-by-case or just something letting players know that these decisions can be appealed but with the decreased involvement of the QAT as a definite factor in map content I'm honestly not sure if they do that anymore. Also I'm assuming that any issue can be discussed with someone and appealed for approval. Plus moving it to guidelines won't make it a hard rule anyway.

This is a very rough draft of this rule and I'd be happy to hear some feedback and see what people say.

please don't be retarded.

Kind of defeats the purpose of mapping what song that you want, sure the song was talking about suicide but no one is forcing you to play it or mod if it makes you feel a type of way, if the song in question had imagery or video pertaining to that kind of subject then it shouldn't be ranked but there should be a line to what's really obscene and what's not.

The problem is that kids play this game, kids are not that strong mentally and when they get depressed they can look for stuff like that for the last push. Also there is the problem when parents found their kids playing this kind of songs or in the worst case after a suicide, so the blame comes to the game, which is not good.
About lewd songs that depend maybe, case by case, but suicide songs should be a no, IMO.

And in general, the song speaks about how suicidal thoughts develop in one's mind until they become a reality. I will always be against publicizing any message like that as there are actually people out there fighting with thoughts like these and all they need is a little bit of extra motivation... There are better and happier songs to map out there, I am sure you can find another one.

How about if a Vocaloid song or any other song that's in a different language has the same themes of suicide, will that be a no too? And hence why Reditum's proposal of adding a 18+ to the maps thread is there in the first place.
Natsu
Of course you should report the song at any language!, adding +18 sounds good, but it have to be done from the game client (similar to storyboard but forced), also idk sexual topics are more soft than suicide IMO, personally I think suicide is a topic that shouldn't be allowed even in a +18 map, since people at any age can have suicidal tendencies and stuff like that can cause the last push as I said.

Hello Reditum, I consider your avatar a sexual reference as it shows 2 people kissing each other. Please remove it, thanks.
Oh well, of course not but I think as long as it's futile to control avatar usage on that scale it's futile as well to control profanity on its own.
Personally I've been perfectly fine with the nukes performed so far as the lyrics in the adressed maps were very aggressive and always involved detailed and excessive violation/murder of one/several persons.
If you compare this to maps such as https://osu.ppy.sh/s/280801 that is pretty much a humoristic depiction of a cliché drugabusestory props for related background involving elements such as hunting your wife and children with an axe through a maze there's literally no common ground between the songs as the detail and intention of the song is entirely different.
I have no doubts that it is desirable to keep songs such as the mentioned one available for mapping.

Regarding sexuality stuff that is non-violent I'm really unsure myself where to set the border. But even there I'd claim that imagery is more critical than lyrics and that most lyrics that include some NSFW-stuff aren't that explicit and suggestive that it's necessary to ban them out completely. I'm relatively happy with a case-by-case judgement.
The map by Bakari you linked is pretty borderline I guess.

It would be good if there was a more obvious warning for NSFW in maps similar to the flashlight-warning in general.

I don't believe the map was exactly for this nuked. Might be wrong, feel free to blame me.

Where do you draw the line when dealing with death? I just ranked a map dealing with a vocaloid's stages of grief over losing her mother (That's what Yukari is about), and it does indeed briefly contain allusions towards suicide as part of coping with her grief. Should something like that not be allowed? I think it's fine. People underestimate and coddle children far too much. There is an actual, outright law preventing the display of sexual content towards minors, but that age varies wildly depending on what part of the world you're in and just goes to show that even there we can't agree on "how young is too young to know the darker side of life". So most online sources use 18 years old.

The song in question is very depressing and morbid, indeed, but it's a song. It's music. Music is about emotions and a lot of the time, about release. While it is quite true that a lot of children play this game, I can also safely say that I'm far more irritated over the blatant sexualization of the many female characters (only a handful of them clearly adults) that dot the landscape than about an occasional "dark" map that likely won't get played very much. A song that deals with suicide is no different from a song that deals with heartbreak or love, and whether or not the subject matter is "too dark" should be handled on a case-by-case basis with full disclosure for exactly what drives the map into nuke territory.

Suicide is an unfortunate reality, but people can't say that songs "push them over the edge", so to speak.

Change that shit to unrankeable.

Men, this is so disgusting, Mapping a song and in the end finish with "no it's not welcomed sorry nukenuke"
Let me ask if the artist committed suicide after make the song my god please. Blame me for this but If you'll make some types of songs unrankeable cuz the lyrics then put it on the ranking criteria at least.

With the change of how the Ranking Criteria Subforum works from now on, topics like these are obsolete.
