My 7 Steps to Improve

Ok, most of this is pretty straight forward and has probably been elaborated on multiple times on hundreds of different threads but i wanted to share with you what has helped me to improve over the last year since i started playing.

My seven key factors in improving in Osu:

1. Relaxation to a complete zen-like state. A slower heart rate will give you more time to judge your decisions; this will improve your focus.

2. Don't rage, the moment you start tilting your negative attitude will heavily impact your performance. Go relax, make a coffee and clean your glasses. Clear your mind before continuing.

3. Enjoy yourself and have fun, remember it’s just a game. If you find it burdensome or a chore for the sole purpose to the better you will not improve. A game is supposed to entertain so play to reap happiness from your favorite tracks. Download more maps and find something new

4. The pro's will always be pro's, never compare yourself to them; this will only subject you to tilting. Instead look at how far you have come. Motivate yourself to become better. Improvement is always good and practice makes perfect.

5. Get something in your belly, food full of sugars will keep your mind active and will help you.

6. Never try to retry a song over and over you can’t do and is highly likely that you will infringe on number 2 if you continue to try. The best way is to keep cycling through song and have fun. Having fun is a key fundamental to improvement.

7. As much as Osu requires skill, your psychological state plays a major role in how well you play. Tilting in one thing but everyone has those moment where they will monologue to themselves at a high combo “OMG, I am so close” before breaking their combo and throwing a spaz. Shrug it off and keep cycling through your favorite maps. Don’t think about your score or combo, just play.

Reflect on these when you feel like you have infringed on any of these rules. Chances are that your wall is only your own attitude.

Tell me if this is the right attitude to take to become a better player.

Appreciate the feedback

Basically don't be this guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIn4L7hUmUI

And I agree 100% with eating food, I am so bad when I haven't eaten all day.
Relaxation and having fun are also the most important fundamentals to me, I used to always get tilted and I choke an FC, now I'm just like meh I know I can easily do this later.

Not gonna lie, my frustration with this game has been close to that. Which is why tilting is a massive 'must-not' for me. I must pull myself away to take breaks if i get angry which is kinda the catalyst for putting this together in the first place; to highlight my weaknesses and improve upon them

TBH the community here are infinity better than any other online game/community i have been attached to. Judgmental people that don't think before they speak are an annoyance but hey that's the internet for you.

it kinda goes without saying, i don't understand why people point out the obvious. it's like saying whats the best way to stay hydrated when running for a long time while expecting an answer like powerade is full of electrolytes to keep your sugar intake up for energy or something and getting an answer of "maybe drink water"

like seriously -.- thanks m7

Well, It really wasn't meant to be informative but more or less if it is the right approach. These are the things that I do to help myself to get better. I even say in the disclaimer at the top that it has probably been talked to death. I wanted your opinion to see if this is the right mindset to take and if there are strategies that help you.

Even though most of it is something that a player would consider, i think players that complain about not been able to improve really don't look at themselves on why. The amount of people that just keep retrying and ask themselves why they can't FC is a prime example. it's not as obvious as you would think. It's obvious to you because you have been around for long ass time; your #3 NZ, you know the tricks of the trade.

This whole forum is about stating the obvious. Yet we still get a good influx of people coming here every day asking the same fucking shit over and over again.

You don't really improve by having a healthier mentality, unless you are being held back mentally. You improve by playing more and challenging yourself.

This is more like "how to become more dedicated to improving" rather than how to improve. As much as you sugarcoat it, improving is ultimately playing more (challenging maps)

I am arguing semantics here but your post is useful information. I disagree that it is more obvious to older players, as it should be obvious to anybody that has ever strived towards goals that having a positive mindset or innovation is a huge driving force in improving

Because people are so hell bent on trying to "improve" that they don't take the time to read up on how to improve.

I like this list, even though I have to comment on a few points in specific.

5. Adding to thiw, I've made the experience that I play better when eating while playing. For example, I'll prepare a slice of bread before playing seriously. Then, right before starting the map, I'll take a bite. Whenever I finish a bite, I'll take a new one as soon as the map allows me a break. Don't ask me why that's supposed to help, I just randomly stumbled upon it in multiplayer when I was hungry and discovered that it worked for me, so it might work for others as well, right?

6. I partially disagree on this one. Playing a map over and over again gets you into a certain flow, which enables you to play that map better while in that flow. However, it's also important to realize when you cross the point where you get tired from repeating the same thing over and over again. It's some kind of "know your limit".

7. A great tool for that is to enable the UI. Not only does this hide your combo, it also hides your HP, both of which used to bother me if they got high (combo) or low (HP). After a while, I was able to reactivate the UI without getting stressed out from that information. Another thing that I found to help is to colour the UI elements red, since red is a low-energy colour, so it's getting less of an obvious thing for you as well as being less stressful for your eyes to look at.

8. Don't try to play as good as possible. Try to improve as good as possible. Not only does this help against falling into point 2, it also allows you to feel great when you improved at a certain map while still not achieving 'good' results at it.

9. This goes somewhat hand in hand with point 8, but put youself some goals. When I started, I had three different goals. First, super-longterm goals. For me, that's currently Freedom Dive and Big Black, even though I'm still faaar from that level. They are mainly motivational, since they're supposed to be way out of your league. Second, mid-longterm goals. The very first map that my friends let me play was Pretender. Of course, I failed miserably, with even the intro being far too fast for me. However, I occasionally played this map, and it was a great feeling to slowly being able to pass more of it. Now, I recently was able to clear it, and my next mid-longterm goal is Scarlet Rose. These goals are also great for motivation, but they actually provide direct training possibilities. Playing Pretender so many times while I clearly wasn't able to clear it definitely increased my reading abilities, especially how fast I was able to read. Third, there are the short-midterm goals. For me, this started out with Kokou no Sousei [Hard], and currently it's 21st Century Girl. These are the kind of maps that are only slightly above your level, the maps that you can repeat over and over again. For these goals, it's important that you want to reach a full combo in any case, and the best accuracy you can. Heck, I didn't leave Kokou no Sousei until I managed to SS it, which again greatly improved my accuracy abilities.

10. Don't be afraid of maps. I see this very often especially with old maps. Now, of course I have to agree that mapping quality has increased and all that. However, avoiding an entire class of maps simply because they aren't mapped greatly makes you loose out on all the experience those maps deliver. The thing is that such maps need a different skillset that modern maps, so not playing those maps makes you skip out on these skills. You don't have to love such maps and you don't have to play them often, but don't completely disregard them and play them once in a while.

11. Now this isn't mandatory, but doing some kind of sports is a great help too. Not only does it grant you more mental stability, which helps against point 2, it also helps you get into a competitive mindset and grants you stamina. What kind of sport isn't very important. Heck, even seriously playing piano or singing would qualify for this (believe me, they ARE pretty though when done seriously. If you disagree, I bet you never practised playing piano for two hours straight or practised singing for one hour - it goes on your substance just like 'proper' sport). Personally, my main aspects of sport are playing piano and jogging, but again, the specific kind of sport isn't the important thing.

12. I get that this is not the point of your list, but it's also important that similar mental factors directly affecting the gameplay that are worth to look into.

Dude, I just don't know what to do at this point, I have been practicing a lot, and I still fail in every map, I try to show my friends that I have a skill, no. Instead I die, so I go to forums, try to search for a solution, and people expect me to relax, and shit. Bruh, I am still 6 digit. Relaxing, drinking coffee does not solve anything at all in my perspective, I always see those "pLz EnJoy gAmE" or "just play more" OR "rank is just a number, have fun." Boi, I know that a game's point is to have fun, but really? I AM LITTERALLY RAGING. And people tell me to chill, relax and have fun, if I am chilling, I would have fun, not rage at all. But if you see, I am raging. And when I look at other people they are better than me, they get scores. Getting scores is what makes me happy and fun. It feels like I have a skill, a real hobby, but in reality all I see is me playing 4 stars and retrying for hours just to rage, or see people tell me to enjoy the game, it got to a point where I would only make skins. And not gonna lie it was fun, now I am not saying that you all are false, or I am not saying something bad about anyone, I just wanna be someone that has a hard to achieve skill, that nobody has. It just makes me unhappy :(

It's an alternative opening. It's actually the most effective opening but most people just don't use this opening because they think it's boring. I use the "try everything and pick the worst one" opening
