I don't have the time to watch these atm, but I do want to add something to the people going LOL I LUV TEH JOEKZ!!1!
Forcing yourself to try to be funny usually exacts in the opposite, making it unfunny, annoying garbage. Let's look at the roots of LPs. They started on Something Awful. The reason I find a LP interesting is when it's over perhaps an obscure game I would normally be unwilling to play, but would watch to get a good depth of information on the game. The X series seemed kind of generic and done to me, but I guess since some people said they hadn't played it yet I guess it's okay for them to watch. Anyways, there are "funny" LPs, especially on SA, that are very clever and situational. These can be clever editing mentions (I lol'd for real when a streamer started playing Under the Sea when Link went underwater into Hyrule in Windwaker), or immediate commentary which shows a skill of quick, clever thought. It really isn't that hard when you apply video game logic to normal, real conventions. But constant jokes, references, and general silliness usually result in something painful to listen to.
I feel
Retsupurae, a duo of LPers from SA do a good job of highlighting the dos and don'ts of LPs, as they voice over other LPs generally making them somehow more watchable because their commentary can actually be funny.
Like I said earlier, I actually like informative LPs about obscure games I may otherwise be unaware of or not know certain facts about, but I also like videos with
no voice over. You have no idea how annoying it is when I'm trying to watch the cutscene of a game and some whiny cunt is squeeing over it or something. I also get a bit irritated when I want to see a gameplay video of something but I get a long introduction about the personal life of a Youtube LPer instead. Really I came to see the game, not your shitty relationship drama. I'm not saying just play it, that's already up on Youtube, just don't fall into any of the drone pits.
Regardless, this is all up to you guys what you do, but don't let things get too your head to much and become another shitty, generic Youtube LP.
tl;dr:
Don't force yourself to be funny because people are like I LIEK TEH JOKEZ
Also my favorite Youtube LP the
LSD: Dream Emulator LP by MikeNmonic. The game is interesting enough to warrant me wanting to learn more about it and Mike has certainly done his homework revealing lots of interesting things about the game throughout his adventure that I may not have been able to do on my own. His commentary is good enough to be soothing and entertaining while the game is dark and lonely, but his voice is never intrusive with the interesting games. He always shuts up during the cutscenes so we don't get a watered experience and is genuinely funny at points. I wouldn't strive to emulate his style, but try and hit the proper contrast like he did.
