Hello everyone,

I'm a long time stepmania player, who decided to quit due to seemingly unfixable timing problems in Windows 10. I found out about Osu! yesterday and am very excited. I had been looking for a IIDX style game for a very long time, not sure how I missed out on this great game.

My question is this; Where do people usually start? Coming from stepmania I'm tempted to play 4 panel, but there is also 5 and 7 panel, and I'm wondering if people usually progress 4 > 5 > 7, or do people tend to prefer a specific category and stick to that?

How easy is it to go between the categories? If you play 7 panel for a few months, does it throw you off to go back down to 5 or 4?

Generally moving from 4 to 5 or 7 will feel very meh for you since odd number of keys. It took me 2-3 months to get used to the spacebar on 7K.
I'm a DJMAX player and I've started from 4k in stepmania, worked my way up 5k in djmax (even though i dont use spacebar for it), got used to 7k in mania, and then 6k in djmax. So its 4 > 5 > 7 > 6

If you are used to playing 4K and learn to 7K, going back to 4, 5 or 6 won't be a problem.
Alsong as you can play odd and even number of keys, you want have any problems in the 4~7 key range.
Now that 8K tho, can't pinky for my life.

**EDIT**
I think I figured out at least part of the issue. I was really reckless on the release of holds, which was causing very poor accuracy. I don't think it matters when you release a hold on stepmania. You can even release for a brief period and still not get a miss, so I think I'm in the habit of releasing early, which is causing really bad scores. With this in mind I managed to get a B, which seems more appropriate. I just need to learn the timings better.

Yes, stepmania allows you to either hold too long or too short, and even allows you to release and re-hold without any penalty. Osu!mania is strict about release timing.

As far as key modes go, play what you want. If you're interested in learning 7k or higher, I suggest trying to learn the highest key mode right away. The more time you spend playing 4k, the harder it gets to learn other key modes. But even after years of playing 4k, it's entirely possible to learn higher key modes.

How do I know if a chart is an autoconvert?
Bobbias
Mania charts have the mania icon in the song list. An autoconvert is any chart for standard osu that has been played in mania mode.

The reason we suggest not playing autoconverts is because they play very differently from maps made specifically for mania. The patterns in them are very bad.

If you want to learn 7k, then play 7k, going through lower keymodes for achieving this goal will only bring frustration.
