Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro.that's cool

erm you probably know(or not ~.+) Code Geass. a bit like DeathNote but imo better..

Samurai Champloo. best samurai anime I've seen.

Air Gear. that is smooth!

In all seriousness now...

I enjoy Key's work-- Air, Kanon, Clannad, and Angel Beats are all good. Angel Beats! and Clannad: After Story in particular I liked. Some other notables that I've watched are Le Chevalier d'Eon, Hidamari Sketch, Aria, Spice and Wolf, Working!, and Higurashi.

Higurashi and Clannad are probably my two favorites. Each series has two seasons (Kai and After Story, respectively), the second of each is where I believe they really shine. Higurashi does have an OVA (Rei, or season zero), though that's more of an aside. Hidamari Sketch has three seasons, and it's a pretty slow-paced slice-of-life anime following the lives of a few art students. It's pretty similar to Aria apart from premise, and both are really relaxing animes to watch.

In the upcoming Fall season, in case you're looking for something to watch as it airs, Otome Youkai Zakuro, Yosuga no Sora, and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt look like interesting new series, and a new seasons of Index/Railgun and Tegami Batchi are planned, in case you've seen the first seasons of those.

@Gens
K-ON is over-hyped, but really isn't that bad. At least, worse series come to mind.
Gens
I'm sure there's another thread like this somewhere else. Meh...

Whatever that isn't K-ON or similar is pretty good. Some of the things I've watched are Paranoia Agent or Keroro.

From Fruits basket, to Lucky star, To Gantz, to Beserk. :D

there's like 20 of these threads

the only anime I've seen that I'd actually recommend to other people are lain and Cowboy Bebop. The rest of what I've seen was either good but nothing special, or downhill from there.

I am watching Baccano! right now. If you're willing to trudge through the first six episodes it becomes interesting after that. I might go so far as to say it is the third entry to my recommended list.

Oh, and I also liked Ouran High School host club. :3 I contributed to my own thread!

This.
Also, Eden of the East.
Ekaru
First season of Ben 10. Second season was ack. Wait, you're talking about 'anime', not cartoons.

Cowboy Bebop is good (or what I've seen at least), I agree with that recommendation. Watch that and the other show awp suggested, he has good taste.
Mogsy
Here are suggestions I fully back:
  1. Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni/Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai - If you dig horror anime that is pretty gruesome and actually fun to watch and don't mind spotty animation sans when it really needs it, go for it. I personally love this series to death.
  2. Hidamari Sketch/365/Hoshimitsu - Slice of life that's sickeningly cute and guaranteed to mellow oneself out. It is a Studio Shaft anime, so expect to see a lot of artistic techniques/styles used (including the meshing of the drawn stuff with real-word photos). The episodes are out of order to develop the series thematically, so you'll have to deal with that.
  3. Cowboy Bebop - DO IT RIGHT NOW.
  4. Serial Experiments Lain - If you are in the mood to THINK due to an anime, do so with this one. It's one of the most thought-provoking series if you give it a chance to infect you. If you prefer to turn your brain off (judging by your posts...), avoid this one at all costs.
  5. Paranoia Agent - Repeat what I said for Lain except do it anyway, since everything becomes obvious. Also do it to honor the late director, Satoshi Kon, probably one of the greatest directors in anime.
  6. Baccano! - Kinda confusing if you're a casual viewer, but persistent viewing will be rewarded greatly. Like Cowboy Bebop, it's something you need to watch dubbed.
  7. Eden of the East - Compelling, hilarious at times, and utterly addicting. I love it.
To add some suggestions of my own:
  1. Nodame Cantabile - Combine a romantic comedy that actually has a damn good sense of humor and cute romance with a whole bunch of beautiful classical music. It's my personal favourite, but it's definitely not for everyone.
  2. Toradora! - A wonderfully done school drama work. You can see the romance coming from a mile away, but the character development leading up to it is impeccable and makes the end result of every character heartwarming. I will admit that I shed a tear while watching it near the end.
  3. Welcome to the NHK - This is a show for people who like anybody. You will find something to like in this mindfuck, whether it be the sad yet true character development or the goofy/pitch black humor or something else about it.
  4. Red Garden - If you can deal with a super-serious anime and don't mind some flawed fantasy element execution (or even the occasional musical number), you'll find yourself quite the wonderful dramatic anime. Characters are relatable to people we all know (it helps, especially for American viewers, that the series takes place in modern NYC) and the melodrama that develops isn't actually melodrama. This is also a pretty damn good quasi-realistic horror title. If you're looking for something along those lines, I'd give Red Garden a shot.
Have an enjoy, yo.
Potato
Soul Eater =D
The only series I've ever watched all the way through.

Working on D.Gray Man, which is very good so far!

You can try Arakawa under the bridge if you want something hilarious and unusual.
adam2046
Highschool of the Dead sounds great. I mean, how can they fuck up a show about highschool kids killing zombies during an apocalypse?
Too bad it's shit.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is pretty much required viewing along with Cowboy Bebop.

meronmyon wrote:

I'd recommend the first two seasons of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei over Arakawa. SZS is "Hey look at our quirky characters as we make various somewhat intelligent jokes and puns!" while Arakawa is "HEY LOOK AT OUR QUIRKY CHARACTERS LOOK LOOK!!"
Not that Arakawa was bad, it's just that Zetsubou Sensei did it better.

Also the dorama of Nodame Cantabile is pretty good! If you can stand some 3D, that is.

EDIT: There was? There were? Which one is correct D:
Gabi
Watch Berserk, it probably has the best plot you will ever see in an anime.

NHK/Toradora! are also great.

Angel Beats was alright but uhh.... not one of Keys best. the ending sucked balls and was so wierd.

FLCL
Elfen Lied
Death note

Higurashi isn't mediocre unless you're talking about the animation. It still tells a terrifying if not brutally violent tale (it's bloody but still manages to be a mature title in its execution, unlike Elfen Lied). FLCL is pure comedic gold. Elfen Lied is Tits and Blood: The Animu. Not very deep or very good. Death Note is overhyped and overdramatic, to the point where it is campy.

Kauhsa wrote:

I absolutely love everything about Nodame Cantabile, from the manga to the anime to the live action drama and even the DS game. Fanboy? Maybe. But this is quality material, so it's expected.

I definitely say that everyone should watch Evangelion at least once, even if its psychological stuff isn't really all that good in the slightest. It's a unique experience that paved the way for many an animu to come.

For those who like to think less while watching their animu, I've got a few more suggestions:
  1. Happy Lesson - Yes, a harem animu. However, nothing romantic is really implied in this series, and it manages to have some pretty funny gags. Good for a laugh or two every now and then.
  2. Azumanga Daioh - The granddaddy of modern slice of life shows. You can relate the characters to people you may have known in real life (unlike most slice of life, which tend to go more for moe genre cliches instead nowadays), the humor is absolutely silly, and this will be something that you can watch a few episodes of while down and it can somewhat perk you up. Hope you can deal with stupid comedy, though.
  3. Samurai 7 - Not for fans of the original/wonderful film, The 7 Samurai. However, this is definitely a decent action titles for those interested. Animation can get really wonky sometimes, but luckily they pull out all the stops for fights.
  4. Samurai Champloo - ANOTHER action title about samurai?! Yep. This one is just good for watching the integration of western hip-hop culture with Japanese history. By that, I mean a lot of hip-hop combined with samurai sword fights that are always nice to watch. Lacking in depth, definitely style over substance. Watch this if you like some cool fights.

Now now, Death Note is quite entertaining and is especially good with an English dub (that is to say, hilarious).
Haruhi is a harem anime dressed up to be something different, which is enough to make it somewhat different. Except Endless Eight, which is some sort of retarded genius.

Rosario+Vampire is shit though, yeah. Complete shit. 95% shit, 5% sub par. Complete shit.

Big "EEEH" right there.
BRS was too much fluff, and Hatsukoi Limited is about a girl getting progressively more naked throughout a day. I mean, unless you're into blatant "OH LOOK BREASTS" fanservice...

Besides, they both amount to like 1 episode each.
