From CNN.com

" A competitor has died and another is in hospital following a tragic end to the World Sauna Championships in southern Finland.
Russian Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy died Saturday after taking part in the final of a competition in which contestants are required to withstand rising temperatures for as long as possible.
Finnish finalist Timo Kaukonen was also taken to hospital for treatment, organizer Ossi Arvela said in a statement posted on the event's website.
Images of the contest showed Ladyzhenskiy and Kaukonen sitting side by side in the sauna. Both contestants can then be seen lying on the ground, apparently doused in water. Ladyzhenskiy appears to be suffering from severe skin burns.
"The event was interrupted immediately after the accident. Competition organization grieves these sad events," Avela said.
Finnish police and organizers are investigating the incident, Arvela said. But he said first aid personnel had been in place and all competitors taking part in the contest had provided doctor's certificates. "All the rules were followed," he said.
The World Sauna Championships take place annually in the town of Heinola."

Have to say that Sauna is soo dangerous sport, because heat gets ~10 celcius hotter in second, when you throw water into stove. Also sauna is full of water vapor and you can't even breath and water vapor is making it feel even hotter. Even I have to sometimes run away from Sauna, when it suddenly gets just 100+ celcius hot =/.

i knew sauna is something traditional or when i think of sauna i allways think of finland (maybe heintsi told me too often). but i never know there is this absurd sport. people's will can force their health and a man died to his strenght in mind

what are your ideas on this incident? do you defend the sport or are you shocked aswell ?

There are some dumb people who take it too seriously, like them.

Sauna is just fine though, it's just a way of cleaning yourself.

Dumb people, yes even Finland has them.

I heard that final competition was breaking rules and both of them should have taken out of the sauna earlier. For example, both lost their eye contact which isn't allowed.

Other questions?

Sauna is awesome with friends and couple of beers!
IMO media made this incident into too big deal like they always do, and ppl are stupid if they go to sauna oiled.
Of course it will burn like hell on skin and not cool your skin.
Not really saying sauna as sport is the smartest sport choice, but it'd be stupid if such traditional sport is gonna be banned in near future.
But got to say i can't stay in hot sauna (90-100) for too long either, i usually enjoy being there when its like 70-80 C or so.
Also wood sauna is the best.

And finland is land of stupid competitions.
There is yearly beach volleyball tourney where you have to be drunk to participate in. Boot throwing, cell phone throwing, mosquito swatting competition etc. where the hell i'm living?

Well, to me 90-100 is pretty hot :p but yes, 120-140 is bearable for lots of people here.

And sure, sauna with glass of any cold drink is awesome!
ffuu i miss sauna so much. there's one in our apartment but it's always full and to speak the truth i'm not really enthuasistic to go to public sauna here. Just got to wait when i go back to my mom's.
