Love Live! dominates the Otaku Culture board, and I saw a lack of THE iDOLM@STER threads, so I figured I might as well survey people.
I personally prefer THE iDOLM@STER much more.

Though if I were to choose, I'd lean more towards iM@S as they make appearances in my favourite games franchise, Ace Combat:

Goddammit, I tried to keep the thread neutral, but it certainly is becoming a iM@S thread. Not that I'm complaining.a1l2d3r4e5d6 wrote:

Love Live! did have better synergy, I guess. I suppose I'll give the series another try.CodeS wrote:
Let's see, I'm a huge Love Live and IM@S Fan (IM@S Since 2006, Love Live since 2011)
To the point of making parties and BBQ's in my house just to marathon any of them with other fans and buy physical albums
and all I can say is... Love Live can't win... for now
IM@S has MUCH MORE character, with better background history, an overall better constructed plot (and no, I'm not talking about only the Anime pls)
Not counting that the variety of IM@S songs just trashes Love Live around, while some of their songs are in my tops playlist (like Cutie Panther and Darling!!) Love Live song has a very distintve sound, while IM@S, having the big quantiy of character it has, allows for a wider range of sound and songs (hell, Tower of Adventure is ultra cute, in fact, the entire Famison 8BIT☆iDOLM@STER album is ultra fun tier, just to mention one), I never get bored of listening to IM@S, While Love Live can get really really tiring after a few hours.
While in popularity we can argue that Love Live is really, really close to IM@S (mostly because it's the hype of the moment), overall IM@S is a much stronger Idol franchise with beter members and overall better songs.
Now, Love Live is amazing when it comes to characters, sure, it doesn't have the quantity or individual / unit power of IM@S yeah, but the few characters it have are really charismatic and really easy to grow fond of them as a solid group
This mean IM@S characters lack this?
Lol nope, but the interaction between the entire cast of Love Live is just amazing , with a great synergy and this makes you love them a lot, which is one of the main points of success of the series.
But still, what Love Live is lacking are more years of experience, the solo albums of their members are really, really weak, and they still don't have that much of an impact inside the idol area (in a situation where let's say, they have the chance to invite IM@S or LL to a concert, they will pick IM@S without a doubt) , give them a few years and they will the best idol group ever. (specially because IM@S willl probably start saying goodbye to the core members soon)
remember how a certain LL seiyuu said in a subtweet in a really subtle way how it's better for them to avoid IM@S ?.
anyway, both franchises are really good, so it's Ok.
BTW, Nico Nico Ni <3
Problem with Love Live is that the first season is really, REALLY mediocre.A Cynical Asian wrote:

Ironically, I stopped watching LL during season 2. Although I don't recall why.CodeS wrote:

While season 2 is ultra fun / maximum shipping / 420blaze it tier, it's really easy to give up on the franchise on the first season if you're not new in the idol area, as LL doesn't really bring anything new to the area.
Try to survive Season 1, S2 is worth the time.

If that's the case, then you won't (probably) enjoy the rest of S2 (well, it depends on where you dropped it, but the last episodes are cheesy as hell, but fun)A Cynical Asian wrote:

Yeah, I know what you mean. I definitely remember thinking that LL's depiction of the idol industry was too saccharine and that there weren't enough definable highs and lows in the series, but it's been a while, so it could possibly be just blind hate of the series.CodeS wrote:

I would just watch it just to have a better point on why you didn't enjoy it, or just to have a stronger counter argument or better ground on where to stand if you have to give a negative opinion on the franchise.
Hmm, Aikatsu is in my potential list, would you recommend it to someone who enjoys a good story and if it has comedic elements, how entertaining is it?Green Platinum wrote:
Aikatsu! is the best idol anime.
-The characters are vastly more loveable.
-The epsodes have a much greater variety to them
-The music is sadly lacking there are a few good songs but if you look into Love Live and Idolmasters' discographys you find there are plenty of bad songs there too.
-No obnoxious fandom
If the characterization is well done, I'll put it on my watchlist. Although it's rather large at the moment.Green Platinum wrote:

In terms of storytelling Aikatsu! holds one main character (As of episode 103 the protagonist changed) but gives the spotlight away frequently to the rest of the cast similar to Idolmaster. In terms of story it isn't particularly deep or meaningful but it's fun to watch but doesn't make any risky choices at the end of the day (only teasing you of potential romance and whatnot). But remember it's at 120 episodes at the moment and I have no clue how long it will go.a1l2d3r4e5d6 wrote:

Hmm, I might just watch it then, but I have a bad history with long animes (put Uchuu Kyoudai on-hold :/ at ep30 )Green Platinum wrote:

Uh oh, long animes aren't my thing either. Somewhat disappointing. But I do hope I remember to try watching the anime.Green Platinum wrote:

True. But eh, I had lingering curiosities and figured I'd ask since it was very minimally related to the topic at hand.Green Platinum wrote:
