Often times I see "re-download if you downloaded before this date" on some beatmaps... Are said updates downloadable by pressing update to latest version in the osu client? I don't really have the time to check if all my beatmaps have been updated to the latest version by visiting their pages...

this means they added a new mp3 for the song, which doesnt get updated just by clicking ingame.

The following is not downloaded by your client if you click on that update button in osu;
pressing the update thing ingame only redownloads the one difficulty you clicked on, but not any other files from the song folder
so if one of these change a full redownload is required
- the mapper changed the mp3 he is using
- the mapper added/removed some vustom hitsounds
- the mapper changed bg
- the mapper edited/added/removed files from the storyboard
- if the diffname is changed your current version of it will be displayed as not submitted
- skin elements changed/added/removed
- video added/removed/replaced etc

well in most cases that's what the "re-download if you downloaded before this date" in description is for.
and other than re downloading the map there's nothing you can really do

Because graveyarded maps cannot be updated and same applies for ranked stuff
the stuff mentioned here only frequently changes in pending/wip mapsets
if you see one of these being able to update checking out the beatmap listing takes like 3 seconds. Most of these also include a changelog or a fat
redownload, mp3 changed!

Thanks for clearing that up, I see this in the descriptions of ranked maps sometimes. I guess that's why I was confused.Okoratu wrote:

I was confused by this too. I think this is mostly cleared up for me. I was afraid I had to check beatmap pages for all my ranked songs.Kaienyuu wrote:

all ranked maps cannot be changed / updated by its creator anymore.
same usually applies for all maps in the qualified section, if there is a change that the owner would like to do really badly he could ask someone from the Quality Assurance Team to disqualify the map in order to change the thing. if a qat finds something unrank worthy they will unrank the map anyway.
so tl;dr: ranked stuff cannot change after hitting the ranked section
qualified stuff requires a disqualification in order to do anything
creators can change the content of their wip/pending stuff however they feel like
after a pending/wip map has not been updated for a month it will be moved to the Beatmap Graveyard forums. as long as they are in that forum they cannot be changed by their creators.
The creator of a graveyarded set can however revive it to pending if they want to continue working on it.

There are chances that Beatmaps requires an update/re-download long time after they became ranked because
- a Difficulty need a wipe due bug which makes the beatmap unplayable/unavailable to play. Known example: https://osu.ppy.sh/b/2199&m=0
- the background had to be changed due inappropriate content (NSFW mostly)
Both things happens extremely rare and only will be done in absolute exceptional cases.
