Another possibility of this idea is to have a leaderboard for various ranges of ranks, so that it includes players with less experience. For example: There would be a leaderboard for players ranked 1-500, 500-2,000, 2K-10K, and so on. This will allow everyone to get involved in this feature instead of the top players getting in the leaderboard every time.
