So I thought the scoring system was quite neat until my friend beat me somehow...
Here are the results of our match:

SONG: Hitomi Sato, Junichi Masuda - Battle! Gym Leader [Normal] (the beatmap may not be important, we were both also using the 4K mod only)
First place - (Score) 798,036
- (MAX) 126
- (300) 66
- (200) 6
- No 100's, No 50's, No Misses. Combo 426x with 98.99% Accuracy
Second place - (Score) 793,783
- (MAX) 141
- (300) 51
- (200) 6
- No 100's, No 50's, No Misses. Combo 424x with 98.99% Accuracy
It might be worth noting that Second place displayed as being "Perfect", however first place did not.

Anyone care to explain how the scoring system works exactly?

The first score might get higher score if the 200s were spread more evenly through the map compared to the second score (getting 2 200s in a row is worse, than having a 200 then 50 notes later having another 200, for example), except if the 200s were close to the end of the map (in that case the bonus score penalty is lower).

Mania scoring is split into two halves. Half your score is pure accuracy. Treat 300g as 320, and everything else as normal, and add up the points.

The second half is based on an accumulator that doesn't go below 0, and doesn't go above 100. When you start the song it's at 100. Every time you get a 300 or 300g, nothing happens, it stays at 100 and you get full points for the note. When you get a 200 or lower, points are subtracted off your accumulator. It's something like -8 for a 200, -20 for a 100, -40 for a 50, and -50 for a miss. To get your accumulator back up to 100, 300g awards 2 points, and 300 awards 1 point.

That's it.
