This is a similar issue to the old AT&T thread except this time it appears to be serious. Net Neutriality, ect. ect.
Please read the AT&T info I had previously posted except replace AT&T with Verizon Wireless. AT&T had a little mistake. Apparently Verizon means serious business. Verizon users, please petition in any means possible to keep net neutrality chugging the way it should. Even if you don't like 4chan, ect. ect.

SPOILER
[quote="http://status.4chan.org/":f98da]After an hour and a half on the phone, we've received confirmation from Verizon's Network Repair Bureau (NRB) that we are "explicitly blocked."

If you've been affected by the block, please call Verizon NRB at (866) 298-5373 to file a complaint.

EDIT: If NRB can't help you, try Verizon Wireless Support at (800) 922-0204.

I'm not one to defend Obama, but Verizon as a company is open to do what it wants, and they're doing the censoring here. And on that note, it appears I can access the http normally now, but again, I have an ISP unrelated to Verizon as far as I'm aware.

I have verizon internet and I can go on 4chan

I wouldn't mind seeing this happen worldwide, but it's quite useless as if it were to happen 4chan (or any similar website) can just switch to or add a new IP/domain.
What do you mean? You'd like to see 4chan universally blocked? That's a step towards internet censorship and could lead to sites, like your sites, being blocked.

'tis just my personal take. I think 4chan is something that should never have existed in the first place. A world without it would likely be a better place. That does not mean I am pro-censorship.

Actually maybe I am... the more i think about it...

If I was a parent, I would most definitely keep my kids from 4chan.
If I was a school teacher, I would keep my class from 4chan.

@censorship, If the target audience which you are planning to restrict has not yet been exposed to the material it would likely be successful, but for the masses (such as Verizon customers) they have already been exposed, and there isn't any turning back.

I am not exactly pro-censorship, but when you have a site that promotes and glorifies stupidity + pornography + (insert anything bad you can think of) every single day, you know something's wrong with it. Like, really wrong with it.

Then again, it's a live example of how anarchy can lead to mass misinformation and mass stupidity, so you know, you could lead your kids to 4chan for once and say "you know, if you keep failing your maths you'll be like all these people."

Only the memes were interesting, but after a while memes become overused, annoying, and a general nuisance. *shrug*

4chan keeps fags away from shit you like.
Neo@lex
Replace every instance of the word "4chan" with the word "/b/".
Suddenly this thread is justified.

Seriously, Other boards on 4chan always have to put up with the shit reputation /b/ and ED give them, as well as retarded raids and shitty cross-board invasions.
/jp/ is pretty much the same as osu! except with slightly more swearing/perversion, /v/ is pretty much Lukewarmholiday, and /g/ is pretty much peppy and Loginer.
It's not fair that all 48 specialized boards get flamed just because some 13-yr old kids from /b/ tell people to google goatse or delete system32 (both of which speed up your computer dramatically).

So it's gay.

/v/ is pretty much Lukewarmholiday
I'm gay.

and /g/ is pretty much peppy and Loginer
no comment.

Wow, wow.

You know, you are the worst offender of this. I'm just saying.

And the memes were never interesting.

As for the censorship debate at hand, I don't think it would be particularly effective. The problem is with people, not the communities they hold membership in.

Your discussion is amusing.

There are a lot of worse places on the Internet; 4chan's just more notorious. It sounds to me like some concerned parents complained and Verizon said "fiiiiiine".

Censorship should be available to those who request it (like parents), but paying customers should have access to whatever parts of the Internet they want. Though if you're doing anything illegal, the ISPs can still look at everything being transferred.

Censoring the internet, screwing up free speech, this is not the world I want.

Honestly though, thinking of this past the entire "4chan is shit" point of view, I honestly don't see how this move can be in anyway profitable or strategic from them, because:

-The people who don't know/browse 4chan won't give a shit about this
-The people who do browse 4chan will get mad

So all they will have accomplished is getting a lot people mad, potentially lose customers and shitload of bad advertising.
Even if I hated 4chan and I had the choice between two ISP, I'd still go for the one who doesn't block it because honestly, I don't see the point of being limited like this. I can block it myself on my router if I wanted and I don't need my ISP to do it for me.

This is just a horrible move, imo.

Keeping people from being exposed to things that exist in reality is a great way to create a naive person who can't function properly in society.

I'm against any sort of censorship, especially from parents. Being a "parent" doesn't make you specifically qualified for ANYTHING and, in many cases, it means you made a dumb mistake somewhere in your life. Parents have way too much influence over the development of things in society.

And, flame war aside, an unsurprising conclusion has been made.
[quote="http://status.4chan.org/":a9464]
Last week we were hit with a small SYN flood—a common type of denial of service attack. The attack was directed at boards.4chan.org, the subdomain that hosts most of the site. Since the attacker used spoofed IP addresses, our server attempted to complete a handshake with clients that had not initiated a connection. These packets would have been seamlessly discarded by the client. At some point, a Verizon Wireless customer or employee noticed these seemingly random inbound packets, and escalated the issue.

The appropriate response would have been to contact our NOC. Instead, somebody decided to block traffic originating from our server without any notification. This mirrors the same inappropriate, heavy-handed response that AT&T made in a similar situation last year. The miniscule amount of traffic coming from our server posed absolutely no threat to their customers or the integrity of their network.

We've had this happen twice now in the past year. The trend is particularly disturbing since it shows that an attacker can have large ISPs blackhole you by simply directing a few spoofed SYN packets at your server.

To summarize:

* At no point did 4chan "attack" Verizon's network.
* There was no real threat to Verizon's network.
* Verizon did in fact, block access to 4chan (boards.4chan.org contains 99% of our content).

In closing, I leave you with an illuminating quote from a senior sysadmin at our datacenter:

The only "solution" that they would have you do is:

1. Don't get DDoSed (Yeah right).
2. Turn off your site when you're DDoSed.

(Sound familiar?)

Well mtmcl this logic is pretty much why i'm unrestrained with my insults on this forum. If you're acting like a retard, what use is it to let them be ignorant to it.
