So with my recent interest in trying to get my hands on one of these great keyboards I've been wondering if their any good for playing osu with? Have you played osu with one and if so how did you find it?
Shohei Ohtani
wow very retro :-)

They're all all over eBay, if you're fine playing with a really heavy switch then model m is good for osu.

too loud
fatigue after 5 minutes of playing
slightly noticable delay in clicking circles
keyboard looks like a shit

need i say more
kirueggy
you know a keyboard is old when it has that red trackball thing in the middle

Wow no.

Keyboard too loud and clunky. So no.

5 years ago, before I made an actual account, It was my first time playing Osu and the keyboard was IBM .

Made so much noise it irritated me, quit for a while after that, never touched Osu nor that Keyboard again e.e

(Until four months ago, but still, I'd never dare touch another one of those again ;-; )

Not really. Those red trackball things (called trackpoints) are still common on some laptops today!
Shohei Ohtani
yeah on shitty laptops lmao

Thinkpads are pretty much the best laptops you can get.

They look like something out from 1990s los angeles california.

the keyboard keys even have spaces between them unlike most new ones which are individually "closed off"

that's just asking for dirt to get in

The difference is though that dirt doesn't really effect the mechanism in any way. You would have to have A LOT of dirt and lint gunked in one key for it to stop working. And even then you can easily just remove the key and clean away the gunk.

You do know that most keyboards have spaces between the keys. Do your research.
kirueggy
oops sorry was referring to those types of laptop keyboards

yeah I know my research.

tl;dr closed space keyboards are, well "easier to maintain" or whatever than keyboards with spaces
Senpoii
Keyboard is a keyboard. Just use what you wanna use.

I linked a pic of my keyboard because you said "most new [keyboards]", despite there being plenty of new (and upcoming) keyboards with this style of key. I also personally love this keyboard of mine, so I'm willing to defend from any hate it gets.
I'd also think it's safe to say that many others here would also still prefer using a mechanical keyboard to using a laptop keyboard or rubber-dome keyboard, regardless of spaces between keys. It's really not a big deal, and I'm not even sure if anyone has even noticed the 'problem' you're complaining about (I sure didn't).
And I don't know about you, but I don't ever need to do any "maintenance" on my keyboard. I might need to clean out the inside a long time from now (I'm talking years), but that's not a problem in the slightest.

To be completely honest with you though: I ruined the keycaps of my Macbook Air long before I needed to clean out any of the keyboards I use. And that wasn't even from osu! (since my homerow keys were the first to wear out).

I have a tendency to spill food crumbs on my keyboards when eating.

There's nothing wrong with those keyboards, I just prefer keyboards like the MacBook has so there's less space for shit to get in + less work for me to do

All in all what I meant to say was "I prefer closed off keyboards"

To be honest I think I'll be fine with the amount of pressure needed to trigger a key on a model m. Up until now I've been using this shitty membrane keyboard which requires me to really push the keys to get them to register. Hopefully it won't take long to adjust to the model m's keys. Besides the model m has one major thing going for it which is that a key doesn't need to be fully depressed for it to register meaning that I won't need to move my fingers as far of a distance to get the computer to register a keypress.
Lewder
i tried, was way too fucking loud and uncomfortable but the keyboard needs cleaning anyway

Eh, well I can forgive the noise. To be honest I like the noise it make... I know I'm odd...
Lewder
It's not odd to like the noise, a lot of people do. It just gets really distracting when playing osu!. I use a keyboard with MX Cherry Black switches at the moment, and while they're not the loudest mechanical switches I have to use headphones while playing because the clicking gets too distracting. With the Model M not even my headphones with pretty decent PCN were able to drown out the sound of the tapping. The keyboard was only uncomfortable because it was straight from the cellar into usage, including osu!. It would operate fine if taken care of but I decided to shove it back into the cellar and bought my current keyboard instead.
kirueggy
Dang whoever plays osu without earbuds/headphones should get a medal
Lewder
i usually go by the format that if there is nobody that can be annoyed by loud music or rather judge me based on my taste in music around i blast it through speakers
otherwise i use headphones
kirueggy
How do people even do that

unless you live in the soundproofest room possible then you're bound to get distracted some time
Lewder
idk dog i dropped osu, havent played it in over a month ill probably sell my gfx tablet too

I pretty much always use headphones. If I didn't I would get a lot of questionable looks from my parents and siblings.

Thats pretty much what they would probably say.

Recorded myself playing osu! once and I was impressed at how loud my keyboard is (I have blue switches). Good thing I don't hear it while playing, it's pretty distracting.

A model M would be great to type on, but it's probably the last mech keyboard I'd choose to play with. Wouldn't mind blacks myself.

Eh. Due to the age of most of the hardware I use I'm not picky about it. As long as it works. I would think that the Model M would be a step up from the shitty membrane thing I'm using at the moment anyway!

I've been without headphones for nearly 2 months, and I'm getting along just fine.
Then again, I have o-rings on my keys, so they aren't as "clacky" as a mechanical keyboard would normally be.

That may shake off my parents but my little siblings are just gonna end up staying the fuck away from me if I did that.

basically, Model M is the mechanical keyboard for hipsters, it's not worth it in the end unless its unique sound gives you a boner
daredakke
Wanted one myself once but I went with a blank keyboard instead, gotta be different somehow huh. But since I've never used it I can't say how it'd feel.

Just be aware that my flatmates know when I'm playing osu! even with the door shut. I even put o-rings on the keys I use to deaden the noise a little. I don't know how it'd be with a Model M.
Lewder
model m sounds like worn out black switches but with the noise level of blue switches
